Residential Refrigerator Question

My Coach is a 2003 Monaco Diplomat 40PBDD, has anyone with the same model coach replaced their Norcold unit, if so what model residential was installed?

For the records, I have not changed the norcold out. I have had zero problems with it, but I've done a lot of research in case it does ever fail.

A lot of people have put in the Samsung RF197 model. I've heard mostly good comments. Some bad too. It's counter depth and is about the same size as your 1200 norcold. However, with some model coaches, the refrigerator is in the hallway. The Samsung is a little deeper than the norcold with the handles installed, encroaching into your hallway. It makes the hallway a little narrower, which might bother some.

On my coach, I have a void under the frig where plumbing and electrical is. I can drop the frig supporting floor down a few inches and reduce the upper cabinet to get the Samsung in. some have a furnace under the frig and dropping the new supporting floor down in that case, is quite involved.

From the posts I've read, it will work on a MSW inverter and 4 batteries. Depends on your camping style too, I suppose. Dry camping demands a little more from the batteries than if you're hooked to shore power most of the time.

I just saw an ad on a new cooling unit to replace the one in the norcold. WWW.jc-refrigeration.com. Not at all familiar with them, but I would research all options (residential conversion, replacing your existing refrigerator with like, or replacing just the cooling unit) if you have a narrow hallway issue.

The RF 197 was discontinued about 3 years ago. New model is RF18.

Lots of Monaco owners have installed residential refrigerators in place of the Norcold 1200. There are two basic configurations, coaches with the refrigerator in the slide or not in the slide. If you fridge isn't in the slide, it's a pretty straight forward replacement. It's tighter if your fridge is in the slide and will require some woodworking.

I've seen two different approaches to using the Samsung. It's so well insulated that it will keep things frozen/cold all day as long as you don't open it while your'e traveling. It will also work on the modified sine wave inverter installed in older coaches and only needs a 1000 watt inverter..

I have the Samsung RF18. I had a Notcold in my Monaco. I enjoy my milk cold, vegetables fresh and ice cream hard. The Notcold didn't do much of any of that.
I enjoy my Samsung and will NEVER own a Notcold again. And I won't go into the safety reasons for not owning one. One recall after the other. I've seen too many RV fires to even consider it. But hey, that's just my opinion.

I just installed a Samsung RF18 in our coach listed in the signature. Time consuming job, not that hard if you DIY home remodels/repairs. I love the change

Norcold Replacement

I replaced my Norcold 2 years ago with the Samsung RF18. It fit into my Norcold 1200 space, all I had to do was lower the floor an inch and a half.
I run it on a MSW inverter and 4 Trogan batteries. Works great NO problems. We do not dry camp.

For anyone using the new RF18 can you or have you relocated the box on top to get more headroom?

I just installed one two weeks ago. That top box, which is about an inch tall, reportedly contains the "brains" for the refrigerator. The A/C power cord comes out of it also. I did not try to disconnect or move that box. I just allowed ample room in the opening. I have attached two phots showing the box - one looking down on it and one from the front.
