Run Genset in Gas Station?
Our genny won't restart when hot. So if I shut it down for a gas stop, I can't restart it for maybe 20-30 minutes thereafter. Does anyone leave it running while fueling, especially with a gas MH? Is it a fire/explosion issue? And while on the topic, should an Onan 5500 gas genny not restart when hot? Ours has done that since new.

fumes
the only problem i can see with refueling the mh with generator running would be breathing the exhaust fumes which come out near where you need to be while refueling. your generator should restart when hot. sounds like vapor lock with the carbuerator. there is an altitude adjustment om the carb you could try changing that.

Just a thought, why not shut down the genny 15 -20 minutes before you plan to stop for gas. Then it is ready to start after you fill up. This doesn’t solve the problem of your genny not being able to start when hot. I don’t know if it is safe or not to run the genny when you are gassing up. Is it on the same same of your MH as your gas cap? Also if you are running the genny to provide AC while you drive in a hot climate, then my suggestion may not help.

I do. The generator exhaust is straight out the back and on the opposite side of the RV from the filler. So no closer to me or fumes, and often times farther, than the exhaust from cars driving in and out on the other side of pump.

the gen exhaust on the thor challenger comes out right under the gen set.right in front of drivers side wheel well. just ahead of the fuel filler. i also have this mh 2013 model year. if your standing there while refueling which of course you shouild be you will be breathing exhaust fumes.

I leave it running but I also know there is a spark arrestor, that gets cleaned and inspected each year, in the end of the generator tailpipe.

The decision to run it or not while refueling might be determined by the station. Many have a sign saying "Stop Engine While Refueling". Technically, that would apply to all engines on the vehicle. I would suspect that the entity that posted the warning meant all. Very important at gas pumps, but not at diesel pumps.

If we are traveling in hot temps we may be running 1 or even 2 roof AC's w genny. Hell no I'm not shutting everything down for a fill up. To be fair I'll be at a Flying J and every truck there is also running along with their genny's & refer's etc.

Engines are not supposed to be running when fueling gasoline or propane, flames are supposed to be extinguished, and no smoking.
A few months ago I was fueling a gasoline powered vehicle and the passenger of another vehicle exited and lit up. He *did* move away from the pumps and cars.. to stand next to the propane tank exchange rack, with 6" letters on a sign that said "no smoking within 25 feet." I got out of there as soon as I could.

Yes, but you are at the diesel pumps, not the gas pumps. Diesel is far less flammable than gas, and the risk is therefore much higher at the gas pumps.
The OP should get his generator fixed. It should start hot or cold.

yes, you would think if it is that important, I would get it fixed.

Just leave it running. Get out, fuel up and move on. The only issue with leaving it running is a little noise pollution. For all of those terrified by engines running, refrigerators on and people smoking, show us thousands of explosions at gas pumps, out of the millions of people getting fuel daily. Just not an issue, ESPECIALLY with modern vehicles.

On the gas Onans there should be a "summer/winter" selector shutter for the air intake. Make sure it's set to summer (fresh cool air intake)
If it's set to winter, hot air intake, that could be your problem. Hot restarts should not be problematic.
Oh, engine should be off when refueling, always.
I take it one step further and turn off the propane fridge and hot water tank beforehand also...for any type of refueling.
There's a reason it's posted as such on the pumps.
