RV Bathroom smell

Hi, we are noticing a smell once we take off to travel, but not when stationary. Thoughts?

When you empty your waste tanks, do you add 5 gallons of water back in the tank? That will help with odors when traveling.

Don't travel with the roof vents open. Make sure there is a little water in the toilet, just enough to cover the bottom.

Make sure there is water in the shower and basin traps to stop odor from the grey tanks.

When sitting still and you turn on a vent fan, do you get odors? If so, perhaps your air admittance valves under your sinks are faulty. If you have a black tank flush system there is a vacuum breaker in the line that may be faulty allowing odors into the rv.

Do you have hookups for washer? Make sure the trap is full there too - that is straight into the grey tank.

Depending on your rig (we need more info, perhaps you will want to add such to a tag for your posts). My 1997 Fleetwood Bounder had a terrible odor once we used it for a weekend. Driving home was sickening, didn’t matter whether we had windows cracked, vents open or closed. Installed the Venturi caps on both gray and black vents on top of roof and problem was 100% solved.

This. ^^

Friends, w/a Discovery, found that because they NEVER used the washing machine, the trap was dry & allowing a septic odor inside.

In many motorhomes the P-Trap under the shower is really shallow. Even if it has water in it there might be enough pressure from a wind gust to force a bubble of bad smelling stuff from the tank into the coach.

I've used these on my last two RV's and problem totally solved.

Check the in-line vents for the sinks. We had the same problem this summer and replacing these vents solved it completely. We got Oatey 39012 ABS In-Line Vent 2X2 13/16 from Amazon, dirt cheap and easy to install. Look at the piping under the sinks and you should find them next to the drain line. These go bad and don't seal allowing the tank stench into the coach when moving. Just unscrew them and screw on the new ones. I didn't even need any tools, they came right off.
