Rv Insurance coverage

First time RV buyer looking for help on selecting the right insurance coverage. Don't want pay too much, but want good coverage. What level of coverage should I look for on liability, comprehensive, collision, et al? Is there a company that is most favored by RVers?

Others are going to disagree and recommend just going to a some carrier like Progressive directly.

However, what I recommend especially for new RVers is to use one of the brokers that specialize in RV insurance as they not only can answer questions you might have about insuring an RV but also have access to multiple carriers and will most likely have access to Progressive if it best fits your needs.

They all have agents that specialize in RV insurance. Not saying that you can't do it on your own but using an agent that is familiar with what an RVer needs is much easier the first time around. There are other agents around the country who also specialize in RV insurance in addition to the ones listed above.

They are licensed in most states and can provide all types of insurance even if you still have property somewhere or need a liability umbrella (BTW, an umbrella policy is something that is really important for an RVer, IMO).

For us, liability insurance is the most important form of insurance to have. If something catastrophic should happen (and most likely, it won't), you don't want the risk of getting wiped out financially should an event occur that harms or causes death to another because of your negligence. Yes, we all think that we won't be so negligent to cause harm or death to another person but I for one, don't want to take the chance to be under insured if, God forbid, such an incident happens. Be sure to investigate the importance of having a liability umbrella policy to override your other policies.

You should have enough collision and comprehensive coverage to cover the value of the coach, or at least the amount of any loan you may have on it.


You should have enough personal property coverage to cover the personal possessions you will have with you in the coach, plus any add-on accessories or bolt-on items. Bras, tow bars, window awnings, etc.


Liability is a harder question. Each state has a minimum, but the amount is usually trivial compared to the costs involved in mot any accident that included injury to someone or significantly damages another vehicle or building. If you get sued for damages, you could lose everything you own if the liability insurance is insufficient.

My .02 on liability is carry enough coverage so that if the worst happens, your insurer will hire good lawyers. Judgements these days easily run into obscene amounts of money. You probably don't need to insure against a ten million settlement, but if you carry a million it will get the insurer's attention, and good representation.

If you carry the minimum, the insurer will calculate it's cheaper to pay the policy maximum than aggressively contest the claim. And you'll be left liable for the rest of the judgment.
