I guess the idea of an "automatic switch" is a new concept? In my 2003 DP, I have a check valve in the fresh water tank pump, so city water doesn't reverse thru pump and fill tank; a check valve in the city water inlet so water from your tank/pump can't go back into the city system; and a "manual" valve to switch between city water usage and fresh tank fill. This means: 1-with manual fill valve closed, city water is directed to coach and tank fill is blocked, unless check-valve in pump fails; 2-if you use fresh tank pump to supplement low city water pressure, fresh pump will dominate and inlet check valve will stop city water from entering; and 3-with manual valve in "fill" position--city water will go to tank thru a separate pipe, with little/no pressure to coach, and if used, the fresh pump will simply recirculate water from/to tank.
PS--those with RO systems have a totally different configuration.
