S/P water leaking under floor
Hello all,
I'm looking for advice and/or comments about what I'm planning to do to the floor in the rear of my RV.
Apparently, water has been leaking (from multiple sources) under the floor in the rear of my RV. Likely, it has been coming from my bedroom slide as well as from under my main slide. I'm assuming that I have now located and removed all the sources of water incursion (although I'm not ruling out that further water might leak in).
My rolled vinyl floor had been replaced when my main slide gouged into it (my main slide has now been replaced 3x), and I had noticed a small lump in the middle of the floor just in front of the bed. Thinking this might be another small screw left on the floor before the new floor was placed, I didn't do anything about it for a while. When I finally pulled up a small portion of the floor, the subfloor (which looks like it is standard OSB plywood) was sticky, damp, and had spots of mold.
The damage covers a good portion of the back subfloor, so I decided to repair/replace everything from the bedroom door to the rear of the vehicle.
Here's what I've done so far:
- removed all the vinyl floor in the rear of the RV
- sprayed the exposed subfloor with a weak bleach solution
- running fans now to dry out as much of the subfloor as possible
Here's what I'm planning to do:
- lightly sand the subfloor to smooth the surface and remove some of the evidence of water damage
- Use Thomsons WaterSeal to waterproof the surface of the subfloor
- Use same WaterSeal on the underside of newly purchased lauan boards to be placed over the subfloor and stapled into place.
- Place new vinyl flooring. The old flooring was held in place by molding strips (no glueing used), so I will do the same.
- Add a threshold at the bedroom door to protect the edges of the exposed old and new vinyl flooring.
Does this seem sufficient? Is there anything I've left out?
Since I'm sure folks are curious about the sources of the water leaking, here's what my thoughts are.
While there was some damage to the slide awning, I believe that the water entered when the slides were retracted and was not a result of awning damage (which has now been repaired). Most probably the water entered this past summer while driving in Florida during one of their recent very heavy rainstorms. So, I have to assume that water was able to leak through one of the heavy rubber gaskets around edges of the slide. I did have to adjust one of the "D" shaped gaskets around the edge of the bedroom slide (where most of the water came in) as it had moved from its proper position.
Thanks in advance for any comments & thoughts you have.
