Sanitize water tank/lines
Hello; In the past I have used bleach to sanitize my fresh water tank and lines, is this the best product or is there something less toxic that works as well?
Thank You!

It's good enough for most municipal water systems, so it's fine for your RV. You only need a quarter cup per 15 gallons. Clorox and other 'fancy' brands sometimes have perfumes and other things to make your laundry smell fresh, but I buy the cheaper brands for sanitizing the water system. I fill with the bleach water, run each faucet until I smell bleach, then leave it overnight. Next day I drain the tank and fill with fresh water, running each faucet again.

As stated, check the ingredients. Some have things in them other than bleach. I do mine every year.

I never worry about it. I never drink the stuff anyway. Carry bottled water, it tastes better anyway. Tank water only used for flushing and washing hands. Don't drink that much water anyway.

I usually sanitize once a year too. We use bottled water for drinking and cooking, so it's not overly important for us. However, it doesn't hurt to sanitize anyway just to be certain we don't have any unhealthy things growing in the tank. I just use whatever bleach we have around the house at the time.

Nothing wrong with a little bleach. If you fill with city water there will probably be enough chlorine to sanitize the system with out adding anything.

Never thought of that. I always fill with city water, so like you suggested, it's probably being sanitized as we drive and use the water.

Same here. I sanitize annually. We have fantastic drinking water at home. Cold and crisp right out of our well. Tastes the same coming out of the motorhome faucets. We drink a ton of water too.

Agreed on other ingredients - Some bleach can contain trace amounts of heavy metals such as mercury.
Worked in the bottled water industry and had to sanitize large tanks with chlorine. Suggest an unscented, name brand bleach. Also, heat, humidity and sunlight will degrade, so keep an eye on storage location.

Does anyone have any experience with a product called Purogene RV and Marine Water Storage System Sanitizer and Deodorizer. The active ingredient is Chlorine Dioxide.

An expensive alternative that does nothing more than a cheap bottle of bleach. JMHO. Since I use good chlorinated city water to fill my water tank, a once a year treatment with bleach after storage is all that I need.
I always make sure to use a new, sealed jug of bleach for sanitizing, it can lose it's effectiveness as it ages. Same as mixing up a spray bottle of bleach water to sanitize the wet bay, it doesn't do much if it sits in the spray bottle too long.
