Let me add a note to this. Before the first trip of the new year, I always run water through the filter for a couple of minutes. Then I let it sit overnight so the chlorene in the city water can do its thing. If I were on well water, I would add chlorox to the water system and let it sit overnight.

Some filter cartridges such as a ceramic candle can cost $40.00+. While those can be boiled others can not. For those, just remove them and keep in the freezer until reinstalling and flushing a bit. No bacteria to worry about.

I go to Home Depot and but refrigator water filters for about $16.00 each year.
