Sealing front and rear cap

My front and rear caps could use some attention. My question is do I remove the old sealant and put new sealant on, or put new sealant over the old sealant?

Always a good practice to remove any old sealant. This will assure that the new seal end properly adheres.

So sealant only? Or do I tape first, sand tape and then put sealant iver that?
