Serengeti Safari

A friend of mine called me to to go with him to see a 1996 Serengeti Safari, we went and look at it and I thought it was in pretty good shape, he decided to make a deal and asked me to drive it home for him. I did but my question is:
The brakes, while it seem to brake ok, they seemed spongy, as I read more it said they are hydraulic/ air can someone familiar with this MH please let me know if it is normal for the brakes to be spongy. My HR Endeavor has air brakes and they feel totally different.

I expect that the brakes are hydraulic with an electric pump backup. The fluid is probably old and need to be changed.

He probably has a Bosch Hydro-Max hydraulic brake system that was widely used in that era for school buses, motorhomes, some trucks, etc.

I too agree that he should service the hydraulic fluid and do other routine maintenance to the system.

Two manuals have been provided previously on this forum that I'll give again below ...they are very comprehensive and will provide maintenance instructions and schedules as well as explaining how the system functions (in PDF form):

Hydraulic Brakes - D3FE Service Manual for Hydro-Max Hydraulic Brake Booster and Master Cylinder

BOSCH Hydro-Max™ Hydraulic Brake Booster and Master Cylinder (provided for Alpine coaches but should give a good overview of the system)
