Service Engine Light

I have a 1997 Tropical on a P30 Chassis. My service engine light is on. I think I found the OBD connector but it is square and it looks different than the ones you normally see. I'm wanting to know if the connector is not a standard OBD2 connector.

The J connectors are for diesel engines only. The are either 7 or 9 pin connectors.

The OBD2 are for gas engines.

There are adapters available.

Although the OBD2 standard became an EPA requirement in the mid 1990s this only applied to light duty vehicles which our rigs are outside of. Given the age of your chassis there's the potential you're looking at an OBD1 configuration as the chassis manufactures seem to use the medium weight vehicles to expend inventory of old technology. Took a few years but pretty much by the turn of the century OBD1 was no long part of the production lines.

If you are OBD1 try following this guide for GM vehicles - https://www.2carpros.com/articles/bu...trieval-method
