Sheppard gearbox leaking fluid

I was underneath my coach today and saw this seal on my steering box is starting to weep fluid. I called sheppard in Pa. gave him the Model M100, he said it is the Sector shaft seal and gave me a part# said I could get it from Amazon. So sure enough Amazon has it and it is a kit 70ish dollars not bad I thought. We have a small trip in couple of weeks 1000 miles or so round trip. Is this something that needs imediate attention or might could wait? I'm not sure I can do the repair myself, I do lots of my own repairs and all of the servicing just not sure about this one. Any advice welcomed.

I have rebuilt mine it’s pretty easy if you have any skills at all. Be careful when you take it apart there is steel balls inside that rap around the worm gear and they all need to go back don’t loose any

Maybe think about topping off the oil for your trip and then swapping for a TRW steering box when you get back?
There is a long line of posts in the Monaco section on issues with Sheppard steering boxes and many are replacing them with a TRW.

How much play do you have in the steering wheel with the engine off? If less than 1/2”, Lucas makes a good power steering seal additive.

I don't have the wandering problem while moving down the highway, so the gearbox I assume is tight just needs a new seal. I will keep a close eye on it and make the trip then when back home look into replacing the seal. Ivylog I have little play with engine off maybe 1/2".

You are one of the luckier ones if only 1/2"... tight enough. Looking at your picture on my computer now, does the center section turnaround a seal or is that just a end cap?

Here is a close up. I'm shooting in the dark here for lack of knowledge on the gearbox, but I am thinking that is a end cap around the seal.

I looked at the parts list for M100 gear boxes and it looks like the end seal is leaking... not enough to worry about anytime soon.

I think you can replace just the seal in place. Screw 3 small sheet metal screws into the seal and use them to pry it out.

This good news, I was thinking I would have to take it apart to replace. glad to know that might not need to happen. You guys on here are great, thank you all for your advice
