Shopping newer Class A...Ford or Chevy
We have 1989 Winnie Chieftain with a Chevy 454...
Looking to move up to a 1998 to 2000 with a slide...
Can I have some help on what chassis that is best & trouble free...
Looking at gas Newmars, Damon & Winnies...
All help is appreciated...

IMHO, you're missing the boat if you don't look a motorhomes with a Cummins or a Cat engine. I'm sure you get what I'm suggesting here--DP'er is my recommendation! Do yourself a favor, at least drive a few to see the difference between gas and a diesel. Good luck.

I do not believe you will find any recurring issues with ether chassis. I would advise staying with 1999 or newer when looking at Fords mainly because of the more powerful 30 valve V-10 .
GM sold the motorhome chassis business to Workhorse in 1999.

Seriously: Car companies are swear corporations, People either swear at 'em or by 'em.
I swear AT ford.. I don't seear by chevy.
Others here will give you exactly the opposite advice and you know what. They are right too.
Just now finding a new chassis with a chevy engine, not an easy job. Ford is the only one making gassers. I still prefer my chevy. Even if i need to find a service center for it.

From what I've, heard and read, the Workhorse, is giving better mileage.
B-in-Law was calculating 9+ from his05, W/H,8.1, 35ft Tiffin,no toad.
Friend with a 04? Ford V-10 ,33ft. Triple E, 6.5 towing,a 3000lb toad 4 down .

Ahhhh, a religious battle...
Our Winnie has the 454 Chevy, only problem with it is when you shut her off she won't start due to manifold Heat on the starter...
Is the 454 the 8.1??_____

I guess I'm confused; how can you compare the MPG of a motor home not towing anything to a motor home towing a 3000lb toad?

I do not get much different with or without the toad. Maybe .5 MPG.

I have been a Chevy guy my whole life and my MH is the only Ford I'v driven in 30 years. I have to tell you I'm pretty impressed with the V-10 and the new Ford 5 speed tranny. I believe you said you were looking for a 99 or 2000, back then the Allison probably was the better trans. but I think you will be more than happy with either chassis. Might get better support on Ford service and parts. There are a lot of Ford heavy truck dealers out there.

One other detail; Ford made a change to the V10 starting in 2005 when they changed to 3 valves per cylinder rather than 2. This increased the horsepower and torque.

I've had two Ford V10s - a 1999 and a 2002. If you consider Fords, research the details as they improved them quickly.
Early Ford V10s had issues kicking out plugs if the plugs were replaced and not carefully (meaning threaded by hand and properly torqued). Why? Because there are about 4 threads on each plugs.
Later V10s solved this issue, but the OEM plugs tended to get stuck and fall apart. There's a tool for removing them... Later V10s also have more power. Once replaced, the plugs are fine.
Both are coil-on-plug design. Expect to need new plugs and maybe coils past 60k.
Both are solid motors otherwise.
The F53 chassis has it's own set of issues - there is an F53 forum where you can get the details. It's not bad, but it's a HD turck chassis, not a luxury motorhome setup.
DPs are better, but also a 50-100% increase in price.
