Shore power
Just a warning. I have my MH plugged in while in storage. This morning I went out to check on everything. I started the generator and immediately blew the 30 amp breaker for the shore power and the 150 amp main breaker in my house. I learned to not start the generator while plugged in.

This shouldn't be an issue. I start mine while on shore power all the time.

Something wrong with the transfer switch, you should NEVER get feedback like that. It's dangerous to anyone working on downed powerlines.

yes you have a problem and its nothing to do with simply starting gen set while on shore power assuming you have a standard issue MH for which comes with a 50 amp transfer switch system

I have an appointment to take it to the Newmar dealer tomorrow for some repairs. The chassis batteries won't charge when plugged in so it very well could be the transfer switch. I have several electrical issues. I had to unplug the horns because they blow continually and the battery boost doesn't work.

So do I.
When I do the 50A automatic transfer switch automatically switches the coach to generator power.... (with no problems).

Things will work like they are supposed to 99.9% of the time. It is the .1% that will get you. Why tempt failure by running a generator while on shore power when it takes but just a second to flip the breakers on either the generator or shore power

No problem with ours either. I do it all the time. When plugged in at home or even pulling into a campground with the generator running.

I don't consider using any of the many automatic features in, (and on). my coach "tempting failure".

Switching with high current loads active is not recommended (air conditioning, microwave, etc). This to minimize/preclude arcing across the contacts of the relays in the switch. Such arcing typically does not cause a catastrophic failure in the short term, rather a long term cumulative deterioration with each switch action with high current on the contacts.

That's a good point. I always make sure any heavy loads are off before connecting/disconnecting or changing power sources.
