Shower walls

Has anyone replaced their shower walls? I have a crack in mine and want to replace it. It is a corner unit.

What did you use? I looked at Lowes and found a residential surround. I know I will have to figure out the faucet stuff and I have an idea about that.

are you just thinking about changing out the walls? Or the shower pan too?

There are companies out there that can do repairs and epoxy paint the entire thing to make it look new. Chances are the old shower enclosure won't work with the new walls.

Was thinking of just the walls.

I'd personally would be very careful relying on aftermarket walls from a big box store to adequately water proof the shower. The original enclosure design relied on lips and overhangs to shed the water correctly if it's a multi piece shower enclosure. It might even be a 1 piece shower that was installed before the coach walls went up. If caulk/silicone was even used, usually it's cosmetic or secondary 'splash' protection. With new walls, if you don't have a good overlapping design, you're relying on the caulking to keep water from getting back behind the wall and that's not good.

That's how it is on my Damon. The caulking was missing on the bottom, and I had a terrible leak. There was no lip, or overhang as a primary seal, just the caulking.

Wow. I think that's terrible a manufacture would rely on just caulking to seal a shower that has constant movement while traveling. Just a problem waiting to happen. If a building contractor did that on a residential house, he would surely have to come back and fix it, or pay the consequences.

There are some good caulking products out there now, but to expect an owner to check it often is unrealistic. The average person probably wouldn't know what to look for anyway and by the time you did see something, the damage has been done. You sure don't do that in your S & B house. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
