Slide lock placement?

Is there a "correct" way you are supposed to use a slide lock? When we got our MH the dealer never mentioned using one and it wasn't until I found this strange item and inquired as to what it was for. I was told to put it on top of the slide. On our slide that means that it goes up against the outside wall and the wide trim on the top of the slide that is only held on with very fine nails. Not at all a good arrangement.

I have found a spot on the bottom of the slide where there is a heavy metal flange that I believe is stop for the slide travel. It is several inches off the floor. I am considering putting the slide lock against it and the outside wall. Is there a problem using this location. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

The top of the slide would be my first choice, but if you have nothing very solid up there, then you need to find a point that is solid. No benefit in pushing the trim off the slide. Have used the slide locks in the past and think you're on the right track.
