slide out "awnings"

since i'm about to trade in my old '87 bounder on a new MH, got a question about the slide outs. my old vintage MH didn't has such, so am new to them.

notice some MH have a awining type cover over their slides. i assume this is to help keep leaves, etc from getting into the slide roof since it clearly doesn't prevent any water from hitting the roof.

have heard some talk about problems with the wind against them when the slide is extended. is this a problem? if so, is there a remedy? notice some cheaper MH don't have these "awinings", so just need to be educated on their use and how to maintain them.

Actually they do keep a lot of the water off the slides. We have them over two of our slides. They also keep the sun from heating the slide roof up.
Ours are almost 10 years old and the fabric has deteriorated so I have new covers in a box ready to install.

As Mr_D said, sun and water are better controlled with 'slide toppers'. Personally, I don't want to get on my ladder or climb up on the roof with my broom to clear any small limbs, leaves or other debris off the slide roofs before I bring them in.... Don't need the hassle. Much nicer to have toppers do it for me, and they do a really good job. Wind has not been a huge issue, but if it gets bad (a little scary) I toss a nylon rope over, end-to-end, and hook 'em down rather gently with bungies under the slide. So far, that's worked fine.

Search these very forums for "toppers" and you'll get a bevy of comments on the need for them and a bevy of solutions for various issues, like flapping, holding water, etc.

I've got Girard toppers, 4 of them, and never have a flap or puddle even in Rocky Mountain wind storms. It does seem you get what you pay for in the topper arena.
