Slide topper un-rolling and re-rolling while driving (Banging noise)
I see many posts about the slide awning flapping while parked with the slides out. This is caused by high winds getting under the awning and flapping.
That is not my issue with this post.
Sometimes when the winds are just at the correct angle while driving the slide cover bangs against the camper. I can not see it but I can hear it. It scares me, the driver, because it is close to my head. I am pretty sure the wind is getting under the fabric and un rolling part of the awning then releasing it then BANG.
I see lots of levers and mechanism on the roller and wonder if I can lock the slide roller just like I do the big awning? Or, does any one tie it with a strap? Should it lock in place? I should post a picture. There seems to be plenty of mechanism not doing anything. Our slide and cover is 2006-2007. I did not get the brand. I am on a short leash because of a surgery and do not want to use the ladder yet.

My first thought would be that there is not enough spring tension on the topper!

My slide out awning has a small arm on the front of the awning that hits the side of the RV if the awning starts to unroll. I'm sure you can get one for your awning go to the awning web site and look for the part. On mine it came installed from the factory. Walk around the campground I'm sure you will see them on other slide out awnings.

I saw that arm but it does not hit anything. Perhaps I simply need to do some adjusting. I was wondering what all the stuff was on the end of the pipe if it did nothing. I thought it was perhaps a dual purpose awning and was set up to use as the front door awning as well as a topper awning. Thanks.

With the slide in try to pull the awning out with the strap. If the little arm does not hit the wall and stop you from pulling the awning out then something needs to be adjusted. In normal use, the slide will move sufficiently away from the wall to allow the arm to clear the wall but when the slide is in the arm should hit when the awning is pulled out.

OldWrench - My Horizon had a mystery banging similar to the one you describe. My slide is very long...about 165" and the roller is unsupported in the center. When I was traveling the center of the roller would flex and make contact with the top of the slide. I took a foot of 2" wide Velcro (the soft loop half) and stuck it to the area that showed rubbing. The roller still flexes when trundling down the road but now it has a soft spot to contact, no more banging. It might not be your issue but it's something to check.

Had that happen on our Bounder back in 2015, as we were heading west through Arizona. The wind pulled the awning out far enough to actually tear the awning for about 6 feet of the length. We ended up removing the awning with a knife and replaced the fabric when we got home.

I have the same problem. While driving I tilted my side mirror up and can see it roll out a few inches, then the arm hits the stop, then WHAM bangs back into the side of the RV on retraction.
Where do I learn more on checking or adjusting the tension?

There should be a block on the sidewall of the MH. The arm should hit it and not MH sidewall.

You see awning fabric, arms and the main tube alongside hwy 10 going to Quartzsite.

A few yrs. ago a fellow in Cedar Rapids developed an awning lock that stops the awning from unfurling. @ $40. It can be operated with the awning rod.
