Yep, it was Newmar, but in 1991:

In 1991, Mahlon Miller became the sole owner of Newmar Corporation. That year, we were proud to introduce a patented power slideout in our Class A products, and an even larger slideout in our fifth wheels.

Not so sure about that... I've seen slide-outs, and tip-outs in trailers, before 1990. "First practical power slide-out", maybe..

NuWa without question can rightfully claim to be the oldest 5th wheel manufacturer in existence today. No company has built 5th wheels longer. As well, NuWa is in fact the inventor of the glide room concept, marketing a unique ball bearing design in the mid 1970's. Newmar should be given credit for introducing the first electrical gear driven glide room. NuWa later followed with our hydraulic glide room design. NuWa has been refining glide rooms for over 30 years.

The slide-out extension has become a popular feature with American RV manufacturers in recent years but the idea is by no means new. Sixty and even seventy years ago British caravan constructors were making models with slide-outs to extend sleeping space or create toilet or kitchen wings. One such development was the 'Extensicar', patented in 1930 by John and Mary Purdey of Wolverhampton. A rack-and-pinion mechanism operated by a handle at the rear of the caravan wound out extensions on both sides of the body.

sorry jim. I became service manager in 1994 and fought the rigging of the early slides right away.

I agree. Slides started showing up in early 90s (as mentioned in earlier Newmar posts) and by late 90s almost everything sold had slides.
