I keep reading about how it supposedly is "rude" or "inconsiderate" to extend slides when parked in a rest area or a Walmart lot. Frankly, I don't get it. Why would the simple extension of a slide or two be considered bad form? It doesn't inconvenience anyone else in any way...which is why I don't get this supposed taboo.

We cannot use the bedroom in our coach unless we extend the bedroom slides.

I need enlightened...

The truck/RV lanes in many rest stops are quite narrow; extending your slides may, in fact, inconvenience the vehicles on either side of you and could result in damage to your RV.

As for Walmart, we don't stay there, but I believe the issue is that extending your slides gives the appearance of "camping" rather than just spending the night.

I wouldn't say it's rude but I would worry that someone would run into the slide.

Many campgrounds as well as several states, towns, and cities, have tried to stop W/M from overnight "camping". They allow overnight "parking" at a lot of stores but it is gradually coming to an end. This is due mostly to people pushing at the word "parking" and actually camping. You are not supposed to put jacks down, extend slides, have lawn chairs, etc. We, as humans, push until it is gone. Then we feel we have the right to complain.

I have done it @ both. Just be smart and use some common sense. @ rest area try to get a end spot near a island to protect your slide. @ Wal-Mart I park away from the activity on a end or divider. I have never had a problem in the 100 or so times, I only stay over night.

As I understand it, it is a danger to others. Those of us that are RV owners know about slides, jacks and other items that are involved with an RV. However the general public is not aware that when they turn a corner there could be 2 or even 3 feet of slide sticking out. Consider that if they are in a vehicle, and as previously stated, there could be considerable damage to both vehicles. Also, pedestrians are not aware of those sharp corners. It therefore becomes an issue of safety, and possibly a deterrent of not being sued when you don't have them out. Also think motorcycles and bicycles.

Not only may it be a safety concern, but it is a common courtesy to not extend the slides or jacks.

As a note: Just this past week in an RV store I measured the slide of a TT sticking out and it was 36 inches.

Rest areas and Walmarts are meant to be a quick in and out to get the necessary rest to continue on your voyage.. When you start deploying slides, unhooking your tow vehicle or toad, putting out your patio furniture etc., well it's something else. While I really like the idea that I could stop at Walmart if I really had to, I've never had to...but I like the idea that I could. If we keep abusing the privilege, it will go away.

I have not heard this. Where does your information come from? Last time I checked four or five months ago it was still the national policy of Walmart, Inc that RV overnighting is allowed in their parking lots, with the proviso that individual store managers have the discretion to override if local circumstances warrant.

When we're in travel mode (as opposed to wander mode) we overnight with Walmart fairly often. We'll do 2 or 3 Walmart nights, followed by a night or 2 at a nice RV park or CG. We always go to a section of the lot far from the store. There's almost always a fence line or a tree line, and we park so the driver's side is away from the parking lot. This allows us to extend the bedroom (essential) and the living room (convenient) without impacting anyone. We never extend the kitchen (curb side), never put out chairs etc, don't unhitch the car unless some errand is absolutely essential (i.e., needed right now and can't be found at Walmart), and always go into the store, spend a few bucks, and look up the manager to say thanks for the hospitality. We call ahead to check their policy, and while we've found a few stores that don't allow it, we've never had a problem at any stores that do.

If you need your slide, then extend your slide. But do protect it by using a curb or island. Walmart doesn't care if your slide is out.

I stay at different Walmarts all over the country. What I have found is that some of the stores have a designated area for RV's to park, usually on one side or the other. I always ask at customer Service and they tell me where to park, or the security guy drives by shortly after I pull in, and tells me I am OK or move to a designated area.

I prefer Casino parking. DW and I can go in the casino and sign up for their players card and get a coupon for a free buffet or free casino money $5, $10 or once $20 each. Hey free parking and free dinner or money, good deal. I have a stack about 3" high of Casino cards. We usually walk in and get ride back out to end of the parking lot where RV and trucks can park.

We have a Walmart in Northeast PA that doesn't allow truckers and Rv in their parking lot. It was just built about a year ago, and they put up a height restrictor. RV and trucks can now not go through.

We are currently parked at a Walmart. Spent the night parked along the perimeter with the main slide out towards the curb. Some consider this abuse. There is prevost parked here that ran its engine at high idle all night, some might call that abuse although it did not bother be.

Have owned our MH for only a few months now and stayed at the Hagerstown MD Wal-Mart twice on a trip to Nashville. Mgmt was very nice and asked that I park in the lot furthest away from the store. Spent some $$ in the morning and had my drivers side livingroom slide out along a median strip. Put the jacks down for stability only. Just touching the asphalt, not trying to put the full weight of the coach on them. When I pulled them up in the morning I checked to see if they made any dents in the asphalt and they didn't. Saw a few other jack indentations on the asphalt around the lot. Can see that if people were to abuse the privilege & not put down jack pads and damage their lots, they might stop allowing us to stay. Common sense should be used. Leave no damage, trash & spend some $$ when you leave and hopefully all will be good.
