Issues aside, & there were some, they were not widely used, so finding parts & qualified service will be more limiting than w/a Cummins.

Probably the best small diesel Class A around is the Winnebago Journey 32 and its Itasca sister. Probably won't see more than 10 mpg, though, except maybe cruising the interstate at a steady 62 mph. They are hard to find; not all that many sold and owners keep them. That model hasn't been made in awhile, though.
My recollection of the Serrano is that it was built on a Workhorse front diesel chassis with a MaxxForce engine. Workhorse was in its death-spiral at that time, and Navistar had huge problems of its own with its EPA-failed engines, so the chassis was a kind of neglected child. The Seranno was a new model and had teething problems, but owners seemed to like them once they got them fixed up. There are several topics on this site populated by Seranno owners that should give you some history.
Not many MaxxForce powered motorhomes around and some RV shops won't touch them simply because they lack experience. And Navistar dealers aren't accustomed to working on motorhomes, so they may balk too.

That's the rumor. I have researched this to the best of my ability and I don't believe the reputation is deserved in motor homes, at least the ones' with the Maxxforce 7 engines. In delivery and short haul situations where they do a lot of idling and low speed driving they can be problematic. In a motor home situation I don't believe that is the case. What happens is the EGR and the DPF (diesel particulate filter) get clogged up due to excessive idling, stop and go city traffic etc. I had a long talk with several people who are familiar with this engine and if you avoid the idling and stop and go traffic they seem to be very good engines with good fuel mileage, at least that's what I'm told. The larger displacement engines seem to have more problems and I haven't asked about them. There are several discussions regarding these engines in the Maxxforce forum on this board.
One issue they have had is the boot blowing off of the turbo charger. If this happens it is a quick fix to reattach the boot. I have been told that if you clean the boot with brake clean and then reattach it you won't have the problem. This is one of those situation where you don't want to press your luck. I have heard that Thor has a retrofit for this problem but I have not confirmed it with them.
Yes I'm putting my money where my mouth is, I'm buying a 2015 Nexus Ghost with a MaxxForce 7 engine it in next week if the inspection goes well.

I’d also be concerned about the head stud issue and the expense of making that repair in a coach. In a pick up you just have to pull the cab to replace the studs. In a coach the motor would have to come out. That and the blocks cracking. The oil pump, oil cooler, egr, injector, injection control module, and turbo problems are more easily addressed. The head gasket problems, if they aren’t stud related aren’t that big a deal.

I came across this Holiday Rambler today while browsing through Craigs List. I had not seen this model before. I really like the placement of the entry door. It is just under 34 ft.

That would be really hard to find unless you go to the 2000-2009 coaches, but doing that also keeps you out of the dreaded and troublesome DEF years too. Now good used gassers are in that price range - a lot changed in 2020.
PM sent BTW with more details.

We have a 2017 Newmar Ventana 3426 and have been very happy with it. Don't want to quote mileage because it depends a lot on how you drive and what you tow. Ours has a queen bed but the 2020 and 2021's have a king.

We have a Winnebago Via (Sprinter 3500 chassis, Mercedes- Benz diesel) that routinely gets 13-15 mpg, without pulling a trailer or toad. It has 2 twin beds in the back that converts to a king that can be left in king config all the time. But, you might have a squeeze in the shower. Also it seems to be a little restricted on weight.

We have a 2017 Newmar Ventana 3436. Actual length is 34'10". I decided on this model because of the shorter wheelbase(about 17' 6").The next model larger has a wheelbase that is 3ft longer. I can drive mine in a supermarket parking lot. I can also get into many old forest service campgrounds that larger rigs cant get into. Hope this helps you.
