Smart wheel

2005 HR Navigator. Horns and cruise not working on smart wheel. Cruise will turn on but will not set. Have been told itís a slip ring problem. Can not locate any salvage place with this. Manufacture has no tech support or obsolete parts. Any info will help.

Your SmartWheel should be a VIP product. Did you call them - did they say no parts or support is available? I heard they had good customer support. However maybe your talking about support for the steering column (clock Spring) which is most likely Douglas AutoTech.

I would not condemn the clock spring yet. Especially if it look like some of the steering switch signals are getting through (Cruise turns on). Do the wipers work? Do the lights flash (ICC flash)?

See if the manual below matches your steering wheel model. I also have a troubleshooting manual for the older model Smart Wheel.

This is my wheel on a 2006 Charleston built on a 2005 freightliner chassis, would you have a manual for it?

Monaco has pretty much quit providing support for the older coaches but motorhomes are made up of parts that in most part are still available. You need to start researching any and all information on your specific coach and the components that are used. I've developed an extensive library of info on my coach and so far have been able to keep it running.

CountryB has provided a starting point for trouble shooting. You will have to find the VIP control module to do most of this. Monaco could have put it anywhere but in most cases it is under the dash probably accessible behind the radio unit.

First thing I'd do is disconnect each of the connectors on the VIP control board and check for any burnt connectors. There is also a connector under the plastic shroud on the steering column. Those are the easiest things to check. The others require a multimeter and contortionist.

That Smart Wheel, is the same as my 2005 Coach uses. My VIP controller is located in the Front Run box (the electrical bay a the front of Coach under drivers window).
This is the troubleshooting manual for it.

I had a problem where the Cruise would not come on. When I got to the troubleshooting step where I needed to unplug the electrical connector at the control box, one of the wires pulled out of the connector. It was never crimped properly. Fixing that wire, fixed the Smartwheel. So I recommend that you give all the wires a little tug to be sure they are firmly connected as part of your troubleshooting process.

Good luck.

My intermittent problems was the plug at the base of the steering wheel. I would start by unplugging and reconnecting it. I got conflicting blinks of the led light on the VIP controller using the troubleshooting guide ...wasn’t much help. Got to love intermittent problems.

I developed a problem after I had worked on replacing the radio so that is the first place I looked for a problem. The VIP controller is mounted behind the radio and during the install I moved some wire bundles. Sure enough, I found a wire pulled out of the VIP wiring harness plug. It had been shoddily repaired before. I ended up using a small soldering gun to repair since I couldn't pull the harness far enough out to work on. It's worked for the last 10 years.

If you need to replace the clock spring, here's a document that might help.

Let's re think and go back to square one,, the OP said that the Cruse turn's on, would that mean that the slip ring did send a signal somewhere ? Normally slip rings don't mechanically break they get dirty/gummy dirt and become non conductive. Extremely rare that clock springs fail, air bags depend on their longevity .
