Make sure it's full of fresh gas. 2 year old gas will cause problems. I know...

A good clean air filter does wonders for a smog test as well.

I know several people who use the change of address. Never had an issue. When you go to AAA or DMV, you change it to the address and it changes the system to no smog due. Of course you need to have permission to use that address from the owner etc

The issue with the smog program is they are constantly changing the allowable levels lower and lower. Many times, vehicles in good repair but ran dirty from the factory passed in 1995 since the state allowed X level for nox or CO. In 2021, they make the levels lower and some vehicles won’t pass since they were never designed to hit those levels. Old carb engines, and some designs like wenkel rx7s come to mind.

Make sure that something sent to the address gets to you in a reasonable amount of time.

And something else that hasn't been mentioned...

Some money-hungry jurisdictions will pull over out of state vehicles for dreamed-up reasons just to check if the drivers license matches the city registered to the license plate. Northern california is famous for that as the annual registration of a vehicle in Oregon is very cheap compared to California. When I lived in Oregon (mid 1980s) my car was $40 a year no matter what I drove... my car at that time was $200 a year in california. People that lived in CA would register their car in Oregon at a friend or family members house.....
One friend lived in Vancouver WA... MUCH cheaper property taxes. He had a business in Portland OR, right across the river. He had both cars registered to the business address - $40 a year. He bought his groceries in OR, no sales tax. Best of all worlds in his mind...
