Speedometer Problems

I own a 2000 fleetwood 35S with the V10 engine, no idea what the specs are.
The last couple of days the speedometer will only go up to 40 MPH while at 2500 RPM's should be around 65 + -, also when I stop it stays on 40 for long periods of time maybe a hour or so. I understand there are 2 sending units one on the back of the speedometer and one on the rear axle.
Anyone have any idea what will cause this ?

Sounds like the stepper motor in the head its-self , if the sensors fail then the check engine light should come on and , if they use the same system as Dodge, the trans won't up-shift, paticularly into over-drive.

Cruise, no-op could relate back to a sensor, or the cruise portion of the system is confused because the sensors don't agree. But then the anti-lock brake light should be on . Sounds like you need the system scanned, with a scan tool with real time capabilities, not the department store type, that just pulls and erases codes.

I had the same problem on both of my 1999 Fords ( a pickup and a motorhome). It was the speed sensor on the rear differential. The part purchased from the Ford dealer was a bit less than $20 and is held in by a single 10mm ( I think) bolt. Takes about a minute to change it out.

Changed the rear sensor today, didn't make any difference. I couldn't get to the other sensor behind speedometer. Maybe I will go to ford and let them run a scan on the system, don't know what else to do.

My speedo would jump to 40 mph as soon as I started moving but would be ok after 40. Dealer replaced the cluster under warranty. Even had Ford set the correct miles to the 1/10th. Invoice showed $536+ $115 R&R.

Cliff Yes made the call and they give me 2 phone numbers of salvage yards, hopefully I can find a speedometer cluster. H will I get the mileage transferred will be another challange.

Someone had mentioned it might be a ground problem and Ford had a recall on this, could that effect just the speedometer and nothing else ?

Anyone know where I can find a speedometer or cluster for a 2000 fleetwood southwind ? I have tried ebay, and a few MH salvage yards on the internet.
Thanks

scooterbob:
Your speedo cluster is the same as one from a Ford 2500 series and up, aprox years 98 to 2003. You should be able to find one at a wrecker. If you feel ambitious, you can take them apart and maintain your odometer, just using the guage cluster from the replacement unit. Be very careful of the printed circuit, it is fragile. You will want to keep the circuit board that attaches to the cluster with a small wire/plug with its mating cluster. Small tabs slide forward to unplug the rear printed circuit board. Make note of the fuel guage and tack at idle as well as the others as you will have to pull all the needles off to remove the guage cluster, I used the gps to reset the speedometer, set cruise and push the needle back on at proper speed. Sounds worse than it is.

Finally give up trying to find a speedometer cluster in a salvage yard. I ordered a cluster from Ford and had it in 2 days but very pricey $710.00 with tax. Put it in yesterday about 1 hour, Wanted to try it today but had a snow storm last night so will have to wait until the roads clear up a little.
Thanks everyone for responding to my questions, this bord is a GREAT source of information.
