Springfield, MO to Taos, NM Trip
We will be traveling to Taos, NM from Springfield, MO the middle of September. Looks like highway 60 most of the way and then 64 the later part of the trip. It appears from Raton, NM to Taos has some steep and curvy sections. Has anyone been on this route and will it be much of an issue driving a 40' motorhome with a toad?

Yes, a couple of grades/curves, but no problem for your coach (assuming you are comfortable with mountain driving and the use of your engine brake).
Said another way 18 wheelers as well as DP's use that route all the time.
Don't get in a hurry and don't do it at night (game on the road-- inc LARGE Elk).
Lots of us use Eagle Nest/Angel Fire to escape the summer heat-- both over 8,000'.

Thanks for your reply. We hardly ever drive at night.

Just got back from a New Mexico trip that began at Taos. The roads you inquired about are good.
If you havent made reservations or know which rv park to use, would like to recommend Taos Skies RV Park. It is off the main road a short distance, whereas Taos RV Park is right on the main drag.
If you are planning on moving down to Sante Fe, I really liked Sante Fe Skies off I-25. RoadRunner is right off 64/285. Noisy. But, closer to Puye', Los Alamos, and Bandelier.
At Taos, I recommend the Enchanted Highway. It was nice arond Angel Fire. If you are a verteran, I strongly recommend the Veterans Memorial at Angel Fire.
Thought you might appreciate some thoughts.

If looking for cooler temps, Taos is warmer/lower than Angel Fire, Eagle Nest or Red River.

We have been on US64 several times in our 40 ft class A towing. Good road from Raton to Cimarron. Cimarron to Eagle Nest is thru Cimarron Canyon - expect to make about 30mph. One climb and descen with a couple of curves going in to Eagle Nest. From Angel Fire to Taos is narrow and winding, again expect 30mph. One long climb leaving Angel Fire. Angel Fire RV Resort is one of our favorite places to stay. Top notch.

Thanks again for the suggestions and comments. I've read that taking the Enchanted Circle Scenic Byway from Eagles Nest west to Red River and Questa then down to Taos doesn't have as many steep sections as going direct to Taos on 64 even though it's a long route.

Good road from Eagle Nest to Red River. Nice drive from Red River to Questa. You should not have any issues on either route. Just take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Not sure I would agree with that statement. The descent into Red River is quite steep/curvy. And a long, fairly steep but straight stretch south of Questa on the way to Taos.
Said another way, were I do have Taos as a destination in my motorhome, I would stick with U.S. 64.

Having driven both routes several times, IMHO, I would not drive the extra miles to go thru Questa. Either route is very manageable in a big rig towing. Just manage your speed and energy.
