St vs Lt Tires

Heading out to buy tires for my 1997 36' Pinnacle class A. Checked the spec label on the inside of my coach and the tire spec calls for St 235 x 85r 16.
Current tires are Michelin Lt 235 x 85r 16. Anybody running st's instead of Lt's? I do know the difference between the two and it seams like a weight thing rather than a handling thing.
Any input would be appreciated.

I would suggest that you stay with the Michelin XPS 235/85R16 tires.
Ford installed the Michelin all steel cord XPS as OEM for a reason.
The steel cord side walls on the XPS flex less than fabric cords. That's important on the tall side walls on the 85 series tire.
The only other tire that fits your coach with all steel cord is the Bridgestone Duravis R250. https://www.discounttiredirect.com/b...s-r250/p/25947

The LT will have a softer sidewall to absorb some of the bumps. It is also designed for traction for both acceleration and braking. The ST (special trailer) tire has a stiffer sidewall which will transfer bumps up into the suspension and is designed to carry weight in a straight line. I can't imagine why your class A calls for an trailer tire.

Thanks for the info, I did stick to the michelins, the current tires are 16 yrs old and never had a problem. Definitely won't let these go that long. Pay attention.

Years ago, tire manufacturers labeled tires somewhat different from the current way it is being done. Generally speaking, as already mentioned, ST tires by today’s standards are used for trailers.

I'm curious, what did ST stand for in 1997?

In the automotive sizes, I have always thought it stood for Special Trailer. I have seen a motorcycle ST tire but uncertain as to it's meaning.

Yeah, I've been pulling boats since I was 17, St always meant special trailer tires, actually back then they didn't even make St tires, we bought bias tires because radials didn't tow well. LoL.

I switched to the Michelin XPS 235/85R16 tires on my 41' 5er when I couldn't keep the STs underneath it. The STs kept popping due to the load and the heat. I personally had less squat with the XPS tires with my 15K trailer. Then there is the added benefit of being able to run with the flow of traffic, when it's comfortable of course.

If you know the difference between ST & LT, then you know that ST cannot be used as steer axle tires. Nor are they recommended for use as traction (drive axle) tires.

The weight capacity advantage of STs is gained by stiffening the sidewalls, which makes them unsuitable as a steer axle tire.

The Michelin LT's actually advertise they are an "all position" tire.

Further confusing the issue is, not all ST tires are trailer tires: https://www.goodyearautoservice.com/...es/wrangler-st
