Starting over

The bad: We lost our HR Endeavor to a fire while driving down the interstate. Before you ask, we really don't know what happened - fire started in the engine and totaled the MH and toad. We had just picked up the coach the day before from repair shop. Spotted smoke in camera, pulled over, emptied two fire extinguishers but it didn't help. Got no engine warning lights or alarms before we saw smoke. DH tried to unhook toad and was overcome by smoke and spent afternoon in ER. The only things we got out were ourselves, our two pups, my purse and cell phones.

The good: We are all OK. And although we were pretty shaken up, we love camping so we are starting over. Toad has been replaced and we are picking up a new 2018 Tiffin Allegro Open Road (gas) SA32 on Friday. (Couldn't afford a new diesel, didn't want used, so went with gas) Working on replacing the contents hasn't been easy, but is working out fine.

Life is too short to live in fear and is meant to be enjoyed. See you on the road soon.

Glad you four made it out okay. Why was it in the shop??? I'd be looking for a connection with what the repair shop did and the fire.

Engine bay fires are a scary experience, glad you are OK.

For those still not convinced, the engine bay fire suppression (and adsorption fridge suppression) systems are a cheap insurance for peace of mind and to protect your motorhome/possessions.

Oil or fuel hoses age/crack or rub/spring a leak - diesel or oil is flammable on hot turbos.

I travel with seven cats. There is no way I could ever get them all out in time in case of a fire.

Seems diesels have this happen. Don't think I've ever read on here about a gasser having an engine fire, so you should be set!

So sorry to hear about your loss. Fortunately you all are safe and the material things can be replaced (as tough as it might be sometimes).

God bless and happy travels in your new coach.

We gave the insurance company the information and they are looking into it. Coach was so badly burned any fault by repair shop might be hard to prove.

That used to be a problem in the late 80s-early 90s with the Fords. The hoses had an issue and the anti-freeze formulation became more flammable when heated well above boiling and running something hard would raise the temps and then a hose failure would spray and when it would hit the exhaust and woof.

To the OP, we are glad everybody is okay and the stuff can be replaced.
