I would check to see if your steering box has an adjustment?

Steering box adjustment must be approached with care, especially with an older vehicle. Get the adjustment too tight and the gears will bind when turning the wheels lock-to-lock.

There's a spec in the service manual. It varies.

1/2" play sounds fine to me. I wouldn't mess with a steering box adjustment for that.
