Steps Wont Retract When I Start Engine

I have a 2000 Winnebago Journey and all of a sudden when I start up my engine to get underway my steps will not retract. Can't move because steps will hit gate. Any ideas?

Check to see if the magnet is missing on your screen door. It is generally on the bottom 1/3 of the door. When the door is closed, the magnet closes a reed switch that informs the stair circuit to retract the steps.

Good luck, and maybe I'll see you down the road.

Yes, the magnet is good and not the problem. I have already confirmed that the magnet is not the problem.

Posting info on the step brand would be a big help .

I'll assume Kwikee .

There are three fuse in the system that need to be found and checked .

And you only mentioned the ignition over ride . Do the steps not retract at all ?

My question as well, Ignition off, door switch on, do the steps move at all?

If not, check for blown fuse or bad/loose wiring. Could be the control board. K5, you said magnet was good,,, was the switching operation verified with an ohm meter?

Check the ground connection for the control box.

Also, the connection to the multi pin at the box.

I too had an issue with my Kwikee steps not retracting and I was freaked out because we were about to take off on a 2 week trip and I needed those steps in before traveling. I keep my MH on the side of the house so working on it was very convenient. I started out making sure the ground was not corroded and secure. That was fine but now scratching my head thinking now what?

I then started from the switch inside the coach by the entrance door that turns the steps on/off and all connections to the switch were intact. I then followed from that switch which ran underneath the coach inside a wire loom and low and behold a butt connector had come apart. I thought in that very moment that an angel had been watching over me. I spliced a new butt connector and used electrical tape and that was the problem. Hope this helps others down the road before purchasing a new step assembly. I thought for sure I would have to do this but thankfully it was a simple butt connector that was my issue. There is no telling how many of these connectors exist on my coach. Hopefully not many.

Checking out wiring info from Winnebago may provide you with fuse locations.
