Sticker Shock for general service

I have a basically new 2017 Newmar LE with 18,000 miles. Wondering if its time to get service on the 340HP Cummins and Onan Generator? Any ideas on cost for service assuming there are no serious problems??? Can just any MH service center do this, and as efficiently??

Thanks in advance

How much time or miles have passed since the last oil change?

If you don’t know, you could have the oil laboratory tested to find out it’s condition.

If you don't know the previous service history you should have the service done now and follow the recommended intervals from here on.

Many RV dealers do not service the engine or generator. I take ours to a local Truck Shop who is a certified Cummins service center. They service both the engine, all filters, generator and lube the chassis. They are better equipped and better trained, than an RV dealer, to do it right.

Cost for my 450 ISL and 10KW Onan averages $450 to $550 depending on variables in servicing and lubing the chassis. I could do it myself for half that, but no longer have the desire.

If you live near the mothership in Nappanee you can pay them to do your service. Attached is what they sent me. Gives you a comparison at least.

If its a Freightliner and you are within a day or two drive of Gaffney, SC, I suggest you take it to the Freightliner Factory Service Center. They do the engine, chassis and genset service. Figure on somewhere around $1k.

If you are gonna take it to FL in Gaffney, better call them now. I called earlier this week to get an appointment for a repair (not annual service) and was told the earliest appointment was 12/19.

I have already scheduled annual service for next March (2020).

Regards.

Chuck

I had Cummins Ocala do my engine and generator a year ago, cost $400, included chassis lube and inspection. Creative Coach in Polk City has done engine only, $200, brought my own oil and fuel filters. I strongly recommend you go to a Cummins shop since it's been neglected so long.

Why in the world has it not been serviced in two years and 18,000 miles?

The service interval on your engine is every 12 months OR 15,000 miles. The generator should be serviced every year OR 150 hours of operation.

Go to a truck service center for chassis & engine service. Spartan and Freightliner (motorhome chassis builders) have lists of their authorized service centers on their websites, but you can use any shop that services medium and heavy duty trucks. Cummins operates a chain of service centers too.

To follow up on Gary's comments, if you are unsure of a reputable independent shop in your area, take it to a FCCC Oasis dealer. It may --or may not-- cost a bit more but you are assured that they generally know what they're doing. An Oasis dealer registers with Gaffney to do certain things to cater to the motorhome owner. To see more about Oasis service ...go HERE.

The closest one to your profile location would be Empire Freightliner in the Mossy Head area. They are also a Frightliner Elite dealer. An Elite dealer ascribes to a certain premium level of service. Read more about it HERE.

An Oais dealer is motorhome specific. An Elite dealer is not but provides that premium level of service to all Freightliner products ...FCCC motorhomes, trucks, buses, and products from their truck division too.

Again, Empire is both an Oasis dealer and an Elite Support dealer. It has a good reputation in the Panhandle.
