For the record nine years ago I jumped off the corporate world and into teaching. Middle school and now high school advanced classes. Please, please trust me when I say that yes, there are stupid questions. I mean really really stupid questions. [emoji1][emoji12]

This wasn't even close to one.

Parking in a farmers field

I once read a story about this class A couple that parked an incredible distance off a country road. A drunk driver came along and crashed into their Class A. Thankfully you have been given many good ideas where to camp. Some for free.

I'm curious as to opinions on one attempting to spend a night on one of these roads. Could be stupid, even dangerous?! has anyone ever considered stopping at a farm house and asking permission from a rancher or farmer to put ones unit in a suitable field? Or am I nuts??
Thank you much.
That is a great question. I too am a boondocker. If I were to ask a farmer, I'd pick one that had an RV stored outside. I also suggest: Days End which is a part of the Escapees, Elks Lodges for which you need to be an Elk, Harvest Host which is a list of Farms & Wineries that will allow you to spend a night or more. We stayed a week on one on Prince Edward Island. There are also Casino's I stayed at one this summer that supplied free Elect 30 amp, it was in near the great lakes.

Talk to the locals. Doing so in Whitehorse we met the owner of the gold claim the show Gold Rush was shot on and got a tour and did a little panning.

Parking along a county road is inadvisable, especially during planting/harvesting seasons. Some farm equipment folds up so it is only 14' wide for transport.

Folks, thank you very much for all the suggestions. I should have clarified my writing about parking along a country road. I would not simply pull over on a narrow one. Could be a deadly mistake, for sure! Have much to learn but I am eager to do so. Simply looking for some peace out in the boonies.

Having grown up on a small farm, you might want to think about soil conditions when "parking in a field." If the field is used for crops, chances are you will sink your rig in it. Think about it. Most tractors have some really big and wide tires with large tread. And, even they can get stuck if the conditions are just right (or wrong), e.g., after a heavy rain.

Now, if the farmer has a well worn tractor path going to the field from the barn or roadway, or a place where he parks his heavy equipment, then you have a better chance of not sinking. That soil has been compacted by use over the years and is, obviously, not tilled for crops.

Just ask the farmer if the spot will handle your heavy rig. He probably doesn't want you stuck any more than you do.

I'm one of those farmers that comes to the door armed if I don't know for sure who's out there. Most of my friends do the same. Don't be offended if that happens, just be VERY polite.

And I don't blame them one bit! When I have to knock on a strangers door, which I do rarely, I get my butt off the front porch or far enough away from the front door to no be the least bit threatening.

That's subjective. I know I must have asked some sometime in my life. At least that was the impression I got by the people around me.
