Question Surge/power protection question

For several years we had a trailer with 30 amp service and I used a surge protection device at the power pedestal.
We now have a MH with 50 amp service, however, we find that we have to plug into 30 amp pedestals occasionally.

My question: If I buy a 50 amp surge device will it work properly when attached to 30 amp service with the adapter?

Yep. Not an issue with doing that.

If you are considering a unit that is outside the coach, you could instead consider a hardwired unit and install it in the electric bay so it would not have to be out on the power pedestal. Then just use an inexpensive adapter to connect the cable to the 30amp outlet when necessary.

Your surge device is looking for spikes in the voltage ( 120 volts ) the amps available on the circuit do not come into play .
As long as the voltage stays in the protection devices operation range , it's happy.

As others posted, for sure. Never hook up without it.

One of the best things I did to upgrade our coach was to install a Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C. It has saved us enough times to offset the cost many times over, on 15, 30 and 50 amp services.

It’s hard-wired in the electrical bay.

Yes, if possible install the unit inside the coach. It will always be in the circuit, and out of sight from folks without one but wanting yours. In our MH I installed it so that both shore power and generator output passes through it. In other words right after the transfer switch, if you have one.

Hey Heweb, I bought a Progressive, portable unit, 50amp model. This is the unit designed to be plugged into the power pole at the campground. I didn't like the idea of this expensive piece of equipment being outside in the weather, and where it could possibly grow legs.
So, in the electrical bay, I cut the big 50 amp power cord, installed the appropriate plugs, male and female, now the portable unit resides in my electrical bay, and if we ever decide to trade the unit, we can take our portable unit with us.
Just my solution to a problem.https://c.adventurerv.net/a/thumbs/i...05f0ef2824.jpg

It’s hard-wired in the electrical bay.
Ditto from me! It comes with a remote display for line status and error codes.

Have always had a surge protector. If you worry about someone stealing your "at-the-pedestal" unit, there are small locking devices available online at places like Tweeties.
