Under South Carolina law, you are required to pay personal property taxes on your vehicle before you can obtain a license plate. Taxes must be paid annually thereafter in order to receive a new decal. Property tax is based on the retail value of the vehicle and the taxing district in which you reside. Vehicles are also taxed at different ratios depending on ownership and weight. The ratios are as follows:
  • Privately owned passenger vehicles: 6% of retail value
  • Business owned vehicles: 10.5% of retail value
  • Trucks with an empty weight over 9,000 lb or a gross weight over 11,000 lb: 10.5% of retail value (the weight used is provided by the manufacturer) including privately owned vehicles.
The retail value of your vehicle is determined by using guides provided by the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

You also may need a special license depending on the weight of MH you buy. It all on the South Carolina web site.

The PP tax can be quite a big bite. My 2016 Newmar BayStar Sport has a value of $78,000 (Richland County tax office provided number) and tax and tag for 2021 was $2,648. The tag component was only $21.

How old is your MH ? Over 15 years is considered an "antique". I only paid $27 last year.

Berkeley County my 2014 Geogetown showed value of $60,000 and taxes are about $850.00. I believe neighboring Charleston County is a good bit higher
Funny though, the tag portion on my MH is around $20 and my Silverado is $95

I’m not sure how the age affects the tax rate, but they are taxing me on the value of the chassis not as a whole. 2002 Newmar MA. $32.00
