I owned a vinyl sign and screen printing shop in the 1990's there are a lot of possible options out there for you, depending on what you mean by temporary. Vinyl lettering comes in a wide range of types, some are static cling, some have temporary adhesive, others use acrylic adhesives, and stick instantly and never come back off. There is one sign I made back in the mid 1990's that I drive by occasionally, it was a mix of glitter style vinyl which had aggressive acrylic adhesive (real pain to work with), standard long life cast vinyl on a compressed PVC backer board. I have been watching it degrade for years, the first to go was the cast vinyl which started peeling up after about 15 years, then the PVC substrate board started to crack, corners broke off, etc. but through all that the glitter graphics have remained firmly stuck down.
