Thermostat on a 2017 Holiday Rambler 35K

I have a 2017 Holiday Rambler Vacationer 35K, was told same motor home as a 2017 Bounder 35K
I am having trouble understanding how the thermostat works. We set thermostat as follows. Zone 1 off Zone 2 Electric heat Auto and set temp at 74. The heat pump ran but did not keep the motor home warm, I thought if the heat pump could not warm the motor home then the furnace would kick in and help Can someone explain how I should set this thermostat. I guess I must be getting a little thick between the ears.

This is correct. You need to set zone 1 to furnace to get it to work the way the OP wishes.
