Tire balancing

Question: I have a slight shimmy when driving between 45 to 65 MPH. Not sure if I need an alignment or maybe a tire balancing. Taking my rig into Freightliner next week for its routine annual service, oil change etc. They said they can do an alignment for an extra $300.

I purchased my rig in 2017, it’s a 2015 that was originally sold in July of 2014. I replaced the rear 6 tires (it’s a tag) in 2019 but was told the front 2 were good. The door label says the front tires are supposed to be 295s but they are 315s. The rears are 275s.

Vibration would suggest either out of round or out of balance tire(s).

Unusual tire wear or not going straight down the road would suggest alignment.

Sounds like front wheels need balancing, might be a good time to check front tires for replacement.

Recent development? If you have the alignment done, be sure they give you a before/after readout to keep.

You may want to consider Centramatics:

Steel wheels or aluminum? One of my steel steer wheels was bent and caused the very symptoms you describe. Easy to see by lifting front tires off the ground with jacks and spinning the tires. Alignment shop told me that it's very common for steel truck wheels to be out of round straight from the factory. I bought a replacement wheel off eBay for $90 and problem solved.

I also have a pair if Centramatics on order for the steers since it's hard to get 22.5" tires balanced around here.

I would try the ceramic balancing beads! I've been using beads in all our tires for years with excellent results! I actually used the Airsoft BB's from Wal-Mart and weighed out the correct amount for my size tires!

Prior owner likely upped the size to better handle a heavy near limit front axle weight. The larger tires can run at a lower pressure at a given weight, giving a softer ride.
