Tire Install

Hi all,
I've been doing a little research on tire replacement and don't want to beat a dead horse on this subject, but additional charges including mounting, balancing, new stems etc, seem to vary quite a bit. I've gotten quotes of $300-$400 per tire over the tire cost. I realize shipping costs also in this instance, but seems excessive. Over the cost of the tire, what would your opinions be for a reasonable install cost.
Any responses appreciated.
Thanks, Bob

I stayed local for purchase and install. They only charged me for tires and balance beads because I bought tires from them

Whoa! $3-$400 per TIRE!?? Just for M&B? That is outrageous. I have just recently paid $65 per tire, balanced with bags of beads, new brass valve extensions installed, and mounted. I have paid as little as $45/tire at Love's Tire shops where I brought in my own tires. This last time I bought the tires online and had them shipped to a tire shop. The crew was fine with it, but the owner got a bit miffed when he found out. It all worked out though.

If you're saying $400/tire for the tire AND M&B, than that's not all that bad.

So, I'd recommend you find a different tire shop. They really aren't interested in doing the job so they way over bid it.

Note that finding brass valve extensions (that mount inside the tire) for large tires is difficult too. You can order them for $7 each from China (and that's what Love's charges for the short ones) if you can wait, OR you can buy them in the US for $120 (!) per set. I happened to be in a tire shop one day when a tire accessory distributor happened to walk in, I asked, and got a complete set from the shop via that distributor for $25. So they are out there.

Bob...are you buying the tires at the place that's installing them or ordering them from somewhere else and having them installed there?

$300 per tire is way out of line.

Thanks for the responses,
I've gotten a quote from a popular .com site (not sure if I can mention the name) for 2 steer tires. The quotes include tax, shipping, mount and balance (at my site) and old tire disposal. One for Toyo M144's 295/80/22.5 for $1668 and one for Michelin X Coach for $2550. I don't think the Michelin's are worth the difference and ,unfortunately, the Toyo's are unavailable in my area at this time.
Any thoughts on the prices though??????

Bob

Over $800/tire? That is out-of-line IMO. Sounds more like a money grabbing scam.

I see them at $538 each at Simpletire dot com plus they are showing several shops that M&B for $60 each. So for two tires, $598 each, $1200 total. Extra for taxes, valve extensions, balance beads.

I didn't check if they still have free shipping...they used to. I bought my last set of 22.5's from them. Had them shipped to a shop not on their list after I went to the shop and asked if it was okay. It was. Love's Tire Centers don't care either.

Note one thing, you don't have to buy name brand tires. You can buy any truck tire and you'll have a good tire...reason is that the US tightly regulates the quality of truck tires, and big tires like 22.5's fit into their requirements for special quality requirements. So I just go by the price. Don't care about the name but go by price.

Here's one for $292 each. That's the one I'd buy...can't tell if they are free shipping though.

I'm a full time RV'er and haven't really had much trouble with tires over the last 18 years. Well, except when one was 10 years old and I hit a speed bump at 55 MPH. Did have that one blow out in the middle of Canada. Back on the road in less than 4 hours though. Thanks Coachnet!

That same online tire price will be much less per tire if you price 6 or 8. Put those numbers in their web site and you'll have more options.
Here is the deal in my opinion. They don't want to come to your site and install just 2 tires, plain and simple.I'd bet theres just not enough profit. I looked at the same thing and thought wow that's a lot but when I priced the set it got MUCH lower.
I went with local who could get 2 at a lower price mounted and Spin balanced than the online store 1100 for Toyo 295/80 ..but I did have to take it in to them.
