Tires..again!

Maybe this is specific enough it won’t get me tired-an-feathered for yet another tire discussion. Advise/comments sought. My coach has 10-year old Michelin XZA3, 275 80R 22.5’s on it. The load rating is 7160# at 120psi. Local shop says Michelin no longer makes that tire or a tire with over 6000# rating. Apparently my only choice is Continental 295 75R H TL Contiecoplus. Anyone with first hand experience here?

That’s what I’m encountering Palehorse. The max load rating shows 6175# whereas my axle weight is 6520# on front driver side (6060# on passenger side). Also, all eight tires have “Steer” stamped on them. I dunno, but hope Google will enlighten me on the implications on Steer vs ____.🙈

Here's a Michelin tire in your size and weight rating:

Take a look at 315/80. Michelin makes a coach tire that will carry over 7000 lbs in that size.

No problems running steer tires on all axles.

Maybe it was missed, but I posted above the Michelin tire in the correct size. With the proper weight rating.

Going up to the 315 can bring on other problems, like dual tire spacing and the possibility of the tire making contact with chassis parts since the 315 is a wider tire.

I took off my 12 year old XZA's and bought Hankook AH37's (new model from them last year). The added benefits on these are they are 18 ply and LR: J! Plus, they were only a 1/4" difference in size from the Michelins. You should check them out on Hankook's site. I bought mine from SimpleTire. They ride great and I have less concerns about soft sidewalls and their problems!

So you ride “quality” (smoothness) remained unchanged?
Thanks for the suggestion. I saw a brochure for Hankook at the dealer who quoted me a price on Continentals.

That was one of my concerns/questions. What’s the difference between “steer” and “drive”. Apparently there are subtle (or maybe not so subtle) tread pattern design between the two (Google strikes again). I assume a steer designation is preferred for the fronts.

Thanks for your suggestions.👍

Actually, I think they ride smoother! Now, those Micheys were 12+ years old without much tread left. It may just be in my head, but I also think they handle the road better. But, since I also added a STP I had only driven the coach back from the tire install without and lost that frame of reference to compare. After all the stories out there about some brands and their problems, I feel much safer and confident on these!

If you are replacing all tires--or even if you aren't-- the 295/75R22.5 is so close in size to the 275/80R22.5 that some have even used them on the same axle or part of a dual pair with a 275/80R22.5. It is the common and accepted replacement size for the 275/80R22.5

Toyo's M177 is available in a 295/75R22.5 and comes in a Load Range H / 16 ply, maximum load 7,160 lbs. on steer.

It's designated as a steer tire but obviously can be used in all positions. This is an extremely popular tire for truckers and commercial buses and from all that I've read, has very good and ride qualities and excellent low-rolling resistance for good fuel efficiency. I'm a Toyo fan as many know.

If you do a search on the forum for M177, you'll see a number of posts that have very good things to say about them even though they are considered a "long haul" tire.
