Tires, how new is new really?

As part of a purchase the owner was to put 4 new 22.5 tires on the rear. He did that, when I check the date code the tires are from 47th week of 2015. that makes the tire almost two years old already. The tires look new, not used.

Is that what you are finding when getting "new" tires, not really date new but, new?

Tire age

Here are some of my posts on tire age.

One thing to do is to get the sales receipt showing the purchase of the tires. Some companies start the warranty "clock" on data of sale while others use just the DOT serial date.

The date code on the 4 new tires I purchased in May were manufactured Feb 2017. I had to wait a few days as they had to be ordered from the warehouse because the dealer did not have my tire in stock.

I had a local truck tire shop replace mine. I told them I wanted recent date codes and they got 6 all the same date, 6 weeks old. I do not consider a 2 year old unused tire to be new. Most RV tire manufacturers recommend changing tires at 10 years, most of us change sooner. So with 2 year old tires you have lost 20% of their life before you drive 1 mile. My $0.02.

I won't accept older than six months when I buy tires.

The seller did not specify a date requirement, either did not know or did not care. And appears he was not provided a requirement.

I bought a coach that badly needed tires. Gave the seller the option of providing the exact tire that I would accept, age requirement, and balancing method - or they could reduce the selling price by a similar amount.

All 8 of the Toyos M144 I got were built in Dec. 16. I got them in March of this year. I don't find that to be a problem.

My front and tag 365/70 Michelins were 3 weeks old and the drive 315/70 Michelins were 7 weeks old when installed.

No, when I had 6 new tires installed in the 10th week of 2015. Tires had 0715 date code so about 3 weeks old.
These were Michelin 275/80R22.5 XZE.

Will Tireman9 explain why a two year old tire that has never been mounted and stored inside with little or no exposure to the environment is not as reliable as a 3-4 month old tire? I do not think it is a problem, but will trust his opinion. Too many unqualified "Expert" opinions on the forum to know for sure what the facts are.

Your money, your tires. If I pay for new, I want NEW, not two years old.

We all have opinions and no matter what contradictory evidence comes about, we rarely, if ever, change those opinions. We're just stuck in our ways because this is what has always worked for us.

My opinion is that a tire two years old that has been on a shelf out of the weather, no sunlight, is fine. The thing is, we consumers can't be sure of the tire's history. Unless we have some way of knowing for sure, we're taking a chance buying tires that someone else says have been properly stored and taken care of.

I finally replaced my 13 plus year old Michelins in October of 2015. I had never thought about tire dates until i started reading these forums. As much as these things cost, i wanted as new as possible so i made sure to eyeball the tire dates first before buying. Not planning on going no 13 years on em though...

I agree that getting a three week old tire is better than getting a two year old tire, but how significant a difference is it if it was actually in protected storage for those two years.

If you can touch the tire and feel the slippery manufacturing residue, they have been stored in a warehouse and are NEW!
Don't sweat the small stuff
