Tires tires darned tires

Please help a newbie out- is it okay to have 16 ply H rated drive tires on my motorhome? Very chunky tread- why or why not?

You might help with a response with the motor home maker and model. Class A, B, C, and size tire, etc..

There should be a placard (vehicle certification label is what your manual calls it) somewhere that tells you inflations, sizes, etc.

Look near the driver's seat or on a wall in a closet/cabinet.

Yes, we need more information.

But the vast majority of Class A motorhomes have "all wheel position"/steering tires on both axles.

I guess if you live on a muddy road, you MAY want to consider more aggressive tread for the rear (though I would not).

Unless you need the added bad road traction, you will find those type of tires to be very noisy and a rough ride.

Steer tires all around will last longer and the chunky “traction tires” will not improve traction enough to be worth it in my opinion. I even run steer tires all around on my Peterbilt service truck that sees some mud on job sites. all the chunky tires do is get me buried to the axle faster.

Been there done that. Don't do it. Rougher ride, harder to balance, and the worst outcome was the rock throwing. Took out the toad windshield first trip with them. 80,000 miles with steer tires and never an issue. Took a chance on the heavier tread, and ended up selling them to a dump truck driver and buying tires again. Expensive lesson for me.

Besides that they do not wear as well, but with a MH that may not be a factor.
Class A MH's have an open differential too.

If your coach is the 08 Itasca, you have 19.5” wheels. H rated 16 ply tires are the best rating available. Also, as has been recommended, go with street tires unless you have a specific reason for going otherwise which would be your personal decision.

Not sure what brand or type of tires you had, but my experience with my "H" rated tires has been nothing like this.

I have a 22K, F53 chassis, with 22.5 tires and have been running Toyo M122, H rated tires on the rear dually's for the past few years and 2 Michelins on the steers. Love those Toyo's. Love them so much I just replaced all 6 tires with M122's. There smooth riding, they handle great even in wet conditions & brake well. With my weight I run 90PSI all the way around and they have worm well too. They are a Regional/Urban, all position tire. I just couldn't be happier with them.

I replace all of them recently because they were getting close to dating out and with all the supply chain issues going on right now and tires supplies pinched already, I didn't want to try to squeeze a little more time out of them only to possibly not be able to get them at all later. I'm a FTer, so I need good tires.

I also don't experience the noise level at all like a couple of others have said they did with their tires, and over the past few years towing all the time I also have not experienced rocks being thrown into the toad either. However, I did fabricate wide, thick, low hanging mud flaps all the way around years ago.

When I bought the coach in 2016 it had 235 80R 22.5 XRV Michelins. IMO, these Toyos are WAY......better than those Mich's and way cheaper too.

Interesting. Why did you go with M122's instead of the usual M154's people use when replacing the Michelin 235/80R22.5's with Toyo 245/75R22.5's?

The H (16 ply) rating has nothing to do with the tread pattern. "H" rated tires could be anything from racing slicks to mud & snow tires.

I'm having difficulty imagining why a 2008 Sunova 35 would need a 16-ply tire, but the federal tire equipment placard on the wall by the driver seat will tell you what tire size and ply rating Winnebago spec'ed for that model. Use it.

They're slightly wider and my previous experience with them.
