If you're leaning toward this method and fore-going the toilet paper, remember to use the "red cob" first and followed by checking with two white cobs.

If you still insist on the toilet paper even after this good advice on a proven method, we have also learned any brand will work as long as you don't use too mich at one time and use plenty of water, and it is not the "John Wayne" type paper.

The latest "Costco Connection" magazine has an interesting article about the Kirkland TP, which is Costco's top selling product. The article emphatically states it is RV and septic safe.
We generally use "Big Roll" from Walgreens (cheap on sale), and sometimes Scotts in the coach. Now that I've read positive reports about Kirkland, I won't hesitate to use that also.

Me, it's not a very pleasant horn to toot, but I DO know. (and maybe a few of you who dump into a portable tank know too ) We have a houseboat that I have to pump out by myself twice a month at least. I see exactly what the paper does...

I have to pump it uphill about 30" thru 1-1/4" flexible drain pipe. If the paper DIDN'T break down that wouldn't be possible. ALL toilet paper breaks down to virtually nothing, because that's what it's designed to do. Expensive "RV" paper is not necessary. All that IS necessary is plenty of water...

We went close to two weeks before dumping our black tank. We had twice the recommended enzymes in the tank. We had been using Giant Tigers brand of toilet tissue. Most of it did not break down at all. In fact it blocked the tank about 1/2 way through the dump. I closed the valve and let the black water flush fill the tank and opened the valve again. As I have a clear elbow, I was able to see exactly what the block was, Toilet Tissue.
Do yourself a great favour and test a few sheets in a mason jar of water and add 4-5 sheets and 3/4 fill with water. Put the lid on and give it a few shakes. If it doesn't disintegrate, don't use the paper.

If i'm dry camping and have to drive to nearest dump ,I throw a bag of Ice and a 1/4 cup of dishwasher soap in toilet so it can bang around in my black tank and give it slight scrub on walls, help break "things" down and remove anything from sensors [that are junk]. Seems to work for me. A lot better then hackin like a hound with his guts full of grass unplugging the sucker. Pull the black tank handle and let er rip.

If you can go 12 days or more before dumping your black, you either have a huge tank or (more likely) you're not using enough water per flush. I'm betting THAT was the root cause of your blockage. Note that when you added more water it started flowing again.

Also noteworthy is that you restarted a thread last contributed to almost 3-1/2 years ago. Almost a record!! ;-)

Actually we can go two weeks because we use the campground toilets as well.

There have been many tests to see which brand/model breaks down faster... Often Tetford Brand RV Sandpaper... er TP, comes in dead last. tied with Quilted Charmin (Which at least is not sandpaper) But even with their extended hang together time but the time I pull up, belt up, and go out and open up (The dump valve) Break up will be happening.

Page 2: Angel Soft and Scotts single are fastest in many tests

Page 3: I use Scotts "Naturals" the one without the cardboard core.. WHY.. Well I don't wind up with a core to throw away.

I found though that this brand has a problem in that it may not unroll well, needs the core to unroll.. So from the last few (four minimum) "Other brand/model" save the core,, slit lengthwise.. Roll a bit smaller by overlapping the cut edges... And insert the core.. Works great.
