I don’t understand the need for transponders at all. Plate reading technology works as well as a transponder. It seems you should be able to log on to a state system give them your plate number and credit card number and be done.
If a mismanaged state like California can do it not sure why all states can’t.

Illinois does that... but they charge the full toll, I believe it’s cheaper with the transponder.

I drove from Wisconsin into Illinois, and back, 80 mile drive, got hit with 30$ in tolls!!!

They will use your plates if you don't have a transponder. The benefit to the toll road operator with EZPass is that you have an account with money/cc information in it already, so they can collect the fee immediately at no/low cost to them, rather than having to send a bill based on your plate.

We had a nice fat service fee added onto the full toll in Florida too for the Turnpike license reader. They had no attendants at any of the booths either because of Covid. Must be nice - lower payroll and bigger revenues.
