Towing capacity

I am having trouble determining the towing capacity of my Forest River Georgetown (GCWR = 23,000; GVWR= 18,000) with a 5,000 hitch. Can it flat tow a jeep cherokee (curb weight 4,028)?

Yes! Unless your total weight of MH & toad isn't over the GCWR of 23,000 lb.

Take your coach to the scales and get it weighed. Have it loaded as it would be for a trip, gas, water etc. Take that weight and add to it the weight of the jeep. This your combined weight. If that is under your 23,000 GCWR, you are good to go. If you are close but under, you may also consider weighing the jeep, just to make sure.

Assuming you haven't loaded the coach beyond its 18,000 lb GVWR (the scale will verify that), than you have plenty of tow capacity (the difference between GVWR and GCWR). The coach is designed and equipped to tow up to 5000 lbs as long as the coach itself isn't over weight (above GVWR).

So the short answer is YES

As "BPoland" said, weigh the Jeep, too, loaded with all the stuff you take and a full tank of gas. Cars often weigh more than the published curb weights.

For your coach, here are the rules:

1) Toad not to exceed 5,000 pounds (trailer hitch limit), and
2) Coach not to exceed 18,000 pounds (GVWR), and
3) Front and rear axle weights to be under their respective weight ratings

Also, make sure that Cherokee is 4 down towable. Not all Cherokees are created equal!

What year is the Cherokee? I just purchased a Cherokee and like the previous poster said not all can be flat towed. You need the 2 speed transfer case (Active Drive II). It's easy to tell, there should be a small neutral button next to the 4 wheel drive selector in the car.

There is also another thread in this section about a Jeep Flat Tow Wiring Harness. People were getting what's called the "death wobble". Because the manual says to tow with power off no power was getting to the electric power steering and causing a lot of violent shaking of the Cherokees. The harness places a toggle in your console which powers your steering during tow. Depending on what year you have this is needed.

I also had my RV weighed for piece of mind. It only came in at 16k pounds so I had plenty of weight available.

Exactly right. I weighed my coach when it was loaded with usual amount of water, full fuel & propone, people, dog, food and all the stuff for a trip to make sure I knew the weight in actual practice.

I tow a Ford Explorer with '16 Miramar 33.5 and am comfortably under the vehicle ratings. Except for some slow downs on long uphill runs, you barely notice you're pulling 4300 pounds.

I do try to make sure that we don't just throw stuff on the rig without thinking about the weight, and will re-weigh soon when we take it out of storage. Funny thing about RVs, they can gain weight over time, sorta like the owners....

Yes and why not? Jeep is gonna weigh about 4500 on most days and unless your coach is grossly overloaded to begin with, you should be good to go.
First order of business is to weigh each axle and all you have to do, it to pull off the interstate or other into a truck weigh station, when they aren't so busy.
I've never had one, that wasn't more than happy to weigh us, including the toad. I like 3 or 4 weights with front axle, rear axle, tag if any and the combined weight of the toad.
