Takes special connector and reader to read the transmission

But I have 2 ports for my 3000, one is in the drivers side fun bay and the other is actually zip tied to the transmission dip stick tube accessible via the bedroom hatch.

On mine I can check codes via the touch pad, not sure on yours.

Allison 1000/2000/2500 series don't have the same shifter display as the larger 3000/4000 series , so getting codes can be difficult and most times requires a specialized shop tool ; as laid out in the starting pages of this pdf.

I am aware that it needs a special cable and software. There is a port somewhere to connect the cable to.

Anyone know where that is?

Can you post a picture of the connector you've found .

If it's the standard J 1708 , it may only connect to the Cummins ECM .

Hey Skip,
As you more than likely know, we have an '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD with the CAT C-7 330HP. It came with the J1939 data ports, front and rear. But, my daughter and son-in-laws recently purchased '04 Journey, came with the 3126 CAT 330HP, came with the J1708 data port, front and rear. While I by far, am no expert on any of this stuff, I am lead to believe that, since our chassis was produced in Oct of '03 and sports the C-7 instead of the 3126, AND, it also came equipped with the MMDC instead of the VDC, that the change from the J1708 data port to the J1939 data port was due to the introduction of the MMDC.

And, since our daughters Journey is equipped with the CAT 3126, it appears the J1708 is used with maybe both the Cummins ECM and a CAT ECM.

Scott ; not questioning a data link to the engine be it Cat or Cummins , just wanted to say the Allison 1000 series the OP has listed; that Allison ECM; may not be accessed from the diagnostic connector he's found .

Well you folks were right as usual. Rye front data port I found was a j1708 as pictured. Also correct I can’t read the tcm from that port. So any quested where the port might live in the back?

Transmission data port

I just went through a transmission problem with my 2001 Holiday Rambler with a 2100 transmission. My check trans light came on and caused my trans to over heated several times. I tried to read the codes using a code reader I purchased but it CAN"T read the allision codes. I had to take it to an allision dealer and he was able to read the codes. I had one j1708 connecter at the steering column . I had another j1708 connected on the passenger side beside the engine. Also there is a 9 pin j1939 connected beside the second one in the engine bay. I just noticed the mh you have. Mine is a 2001 HR Ambassador as well. My is a DP with the cummins 5.9 and has the 2100 trans not the 1000. Good luck.

The pdf on Allison codes for the 1000/2000 series , shows the shop tool hooks up by removing the wiring from the TCM and putting the shop tool in series in the wiring .
Not 100% sure , but good possibility that maybe the way connecting to the TCM is required to read codes.

Physically the 1000/2XXX series are so similar you have to go to the serial numbers to determine the series. Trans pan and external spin on filter , can't be used to determine your trans type.

Mike ; while your coach was in the shop did you notice where the mechanic connected to read codes?
Or were you kept away from your RV?
