I am shopping around for my first transmission service on my Allison 3000 MH tranny. Dealer quoted a "discounted" price of $360. Does that sound fair?? Considered doing it myself, but would have to find something big enough to handle the 22 quarts of fluid. I don't know, what do you guys think??

Sarge,
Why do you need something to handle 22 qts of fluid? I have the 3000 in my signature coach. The first servicing calls for one filter to be replaced. I lost less than a gallon of fluid. Please help me understand what servicing is to be preformed on the 3000?
thanks

Sarge, I changed the fluid and filters in the Allison 3060 in my '00 Monaco Diplomat(Cummins 8.3L ISC). I bought a 20 qt. drain pan from a local autoparts store. I got the filters from Inland Truck Parts in Irving, TX by mail(they have a website and an 800 #). It was not that difficult. It drained exactly 19 qts. of fluid from the main drain plug and the two filters. My total cost was around $100 for the fluid(DEXRON III) and two Allison Extended Life filters. If your transmission has Transynd in it, this costs about $40 per gallon and it takes 5 gallons. Dexron is $8-9 per gallon. The price you were quoted is reasonable if it has Transynd in it, but it's way too high if its Dexron. I'd also get a quote from a SpeedCo store or the service dept. at a Petro truck stop.

I use Dexron. Total cost in 2004 at a Spartan chassis service place was $291. Total cost in 2006 with a mobile RV service was $290.

Gary,
The first service recommended in the owners manual by Allison is at 5000 miles, and to change the fluid and both filters.
Gaines and Paul,
There is Transynd in the tranny, and it does say in the manual to only use Transynd. So I guess $360 isn't terrible, considering im in CA.
And I guess I don't have to put up the the mess, and disposing of the old fluid. Guess I will let them do it.
Thanks for the info,
Sarge

Sarge, I'd give Allison a call on this one. 5,000 miles seems like a very short change interval considering it has transynd in it. This is supposed to be an extended life set-up. I agree the price you were quoted is reasonable.

Sarge,
Check your Allison manual again. If you have Transsynd (which I am sure you do) you only need to change the filter(s?) at 5000 miles. You don't need to change fluid until 3 years/75,000 miles.
I'd give a call to Allison to clarify this.

Sarge,
Yep, before doing anything call Allison. They should tell you that the main filter and what ever fluid you loose is all that needs changing at 5K. I have "heard" they have eliminated this change. You may get the answer you need to do nothing!

This is from another forum:
"I talked to Allison today regarding the first transmission filter change @ 5000 miles, and learned that if your transmission was built after June or July 2006, you may have a new style filter that does not require a change until the first fluid change @ 75K miles/36 months. You should verify your transmission S/N with Allison to see if yours qualifies. Spartan can give you the transmission S/N. According to
the tech I talked to, I'm only the second inquiry they've had on that subject. Our coach was built in December 2006, so if you have a fairly new coach and have not changed the filter yet, you may get a nice surprise. It's certainly worth the phone call."

Wow, great info guys!! I will check the ser no of the trans and see where it falls within the new specs. Gary was right as well, I re-read the manual and even if the 5000 mile service is required, it's filer only. Thanks a bunch, once again IRV2 saves me a bunch of money!!
