Travelling South from New England
Hello All, We're newbies and will be making our first trek south in our DP. I would like to avoid NY City and I believe the Garden State Pkwy prohibits vehicles of that size. Does anyone have any suggestions on routes to bypass NYC and head south. We are a 36' DP pulling a car hauler with our RAV 4total of 56'. Any suggestions would be helpful. Normally we would have gone the Wilbur Cross Pkwy and over the Tappan Zee to Garden State but bridge heights won't work at 11'7"

I take Mass Pike west to NY, then 87 south. You can also take I-91 to Hartford, then 84 west to Newburgh, followed by 87 south.
From there I go 287 to 202 to 31, then 295 at Ewing, NJ, all the way to the Delaware Memorial Bridge. At that point, join 95 and the crowd.
Lots of folks stay on I-84 west to I-81 south in PA, then break off at route 17 in Winchester, VA. This brings you to Fredericksburg, VA, which is south of almost all the northern East Coast problem spots. Some go further south on I-81 before rejoining I-95. Note: I-81 south is a popular truck route; I have found it more stressful than I-95.

If your goal is to get to warm weather as quickly as possible then I-95 is your best bet even though it runs through the City. Try to avoid the Cross Bronx during rush hours and check the traffic patterns with Google Maps before you decide. You can bypass the City by taking 287 to the Tappan Zee Bridge but that generally doesn't pay. Better to adjust your mindset to allow you to enjoy the traffic.
The Parkways in NY only allow cars so you will have to take 95. Same for the Palisades Interstate Parkway in NY-NJ. However the Garden State Parkway does allow RVs (check the website for size limitations).

I'm planning on nearly the same thing but in the opposite direction. From South Carolina, I will use I-77, I-81, I-84, I-87 to Albany, NY, then go east on 7, 9, and 202 to I-95. I did almost the same thing in 2016, except that I crossed to I-95 on I-90 in Mass. The tolls were outrageous! I'm thinking the drive across Vermont and New Hampshire will be a good break from the super slab. I welcome any input from members familier with this route. Oh yeah, 40' motorhome pulling a Jeep.

I have driven Maine to Florida dozens of times and that is the route I found best. It avoids the NYC-Philadelphia-Baltimore-Washington mess which can sometimes be a nightmare of stop and go traffic. And the scenery on I-81 is better than I-95. I don’t find it more stressful than I-95, I find the opposite. One you get south of the Washington DC complex you can make your way back to I-95 which is then good the rest of the way south.

We have been on the Garden State - it does allow RV's (check for specifics - I believe it is total not to exceed 62') - but should you go that route you need to be aware of the arched overpasses - stay out of the right most lanes. Center lanes are your friend.....

Just use 95. I admit it sucks. I have bounced 2 TVs off the mounts, breaking one of them. I am still surprised I haven’t had my suspension come thru the floor. But 95 is the quickest way down. I live in northern RI and my mom is still in CT off exit 44 in West Haven. The rest of my family is in The Darien area off ext 9 on 95. I travel 95 extensively and know how bad it is. I also realize it’s more direct than trying use alternate routing. Once you are past the city New Jersey starts to get better. The beltway area sees traffic, but I think they have finished a lot of the road work.

If the weather is good : I/495 t0 I/90 to I/84 to I/81 to I/77 to I/26 to I/95 in SC. Been using this route for more than 30 years and it works for us.

And you're not allowed on that Parkway. No RVs, nothing in tow.

I forgot to include; if snow is a possibility I go: I/195 t0 I/95 to the TZ Bridge to I/287 to I/78 to I/81 to US 17 (near Winchester VA) to I/95. It's always flatter and warmer.

This is exactly what we do to avoid NYC, DC, and Baltimore. Slightly longer but much better roads and less stress, on the average. We'll even go this way in the car!

mj ….. originally from Mass, just west of Boston. we’ve done the East coast a lot, and we recommend the full bypass route as described by Cousin Ed and a few others. Add about 50 miles or so, but in a trip of a thousand miles that’s chump change. Much better trip.
Coming off the Cape you may be tempted to go I-195 through PVD, then find some good CT road to hook up direct to I-84, save some time/miles. Don’t get sucked in. It’ll be more hassle than it is worth. CT has made a lot of improvements on I-84 in the past few years. We just drove full length about a month ago, and the westbound side is in good shape. Still a little construction remaining around Waterbury, but no big deal. Just do 495 to the Pike, and I-84. Easier, smoother. You’re 62 ft long, generally stick to the roads made for vehicles that size.

That is the best route, in my opinion. - Paul
