Trusting a friend
Well I had a friend that lost his job so I thought I would hire him to help me on my RV. One of the jobs was to replace the shocks and he did the job. I never went under to check his work. He was a master mechanic so he said. Well I was winterizing it yesterday and thought I would check things out and crawling under the RV I grabbed the shock right front and the whole top of the shock was loose. Now my question to others here on RV issues has anyone had the bolts back off that much. The nut had 2 treads past the nut. The self locking was fine and it took a lot of force to turn the nut. I have not checked the others yet because the cold front came through. I have seen this happen to nuts with no nut drag but this one is very good. So this is why I am ask the rvers if they have ever had this happen. They have been on for 2 years.

If the hardware was installed correctly then no it should not have come that loose!!

Self locking nuts do not back off UNLESS stripped.
From your description it wasn't.
Now you have fixed it........no need blaming friend after 2 yrs.
Just check the others one and move on.
BUT I wouldn't 'hire' friend for any unsupervised jobs again

I am NOT a master mechanic, I'd barely qualify as a shade tree mechanic, but I changed all four shocks on my coach by myself and they are all still rock solid.

A "Master Mechanic" by who's standards?
There is probably a good reason why he lost his job.

Never encountered a shock coming loose.

Changed the front shocks on the '02 DSDP about 5 times when doing ride quality "research" for Reyco Granning and the present Magna a couple times. Not once did they ever come loose.

Not being much of a mechanic myself, I would have to understand why in two years you did not notice any degradation in ride or handling if there was that much play in the shock.
I commend you on having compassion for a friend who was experiencing tough times. Assuming that the personal safety of you and your loved ones is not put at risk, you did a solid. To be a compassionate person, you have to risk the possibility of a NGDGU* outcome. Just get it fixed and keep the good memory.

Have you tried to further tighten the nut? Wondering if it galled and is not capable of being further tightened.

It is fixed and you still have a friend. It did not cause any damage so why worry how it happened.
Even experts make mistakes. That nut could have jammed against a burr and felt tight.
The best experts make mistrakes.
