We had our Progressive Industries hardwired EMS on order before we picked up our coach, and it was installed the first time we got it home. In the last year, we have twice had low power drop outs, and the EMS protected us. Low power is very damaging to sensitive electronics like computers, and we all know how many computer boards are in newer units! The hard wired version isn’t hard to put in, and you never have to remember to pull it out or put it up or lock it.

We installed ours unit after the transfer switch. That way it protects us from the generator and transfer switch failures as well. I have seen too many transfer switches fail due to burned contacted or burned terminals. (Note: Terminals should be checked for tightness periodically, but don't over torque them)

Never need it till it is too late.

First thing we installed before driving off the dealer's lot was the Progressive 50 amp EMS and installed it in the electric bay next to the transfer switch.

I is better than insurance.

Just remember to pop the cover off the EMS occasionally to be certain that those lugs have not loosened up. Doing the same inside the transfer switch and elsewhere is also a good idea.

With all power off and disconnected, of course.

Wow, catastrophic failure. I'm curious about the 50 amp plug. It was plugged into the socket on the pedestal and in doing that, the prong pushed up inside the plug and shorted?

The prong did not push in. The neutral wire came loose inside the plug and touched a hot leg.
