Upgrading Satellite Dish to Receive DirecTV

The original satellite dish that came with our rig was outdated and worn out, so I removed the dish some time ago. Now I want to install an upgraded dish to receive Direct TV when I'm in the MH. From what I've read, it looks like I should just give up on HD as too much trouble and just stick with an SD system. Local installer is proposing to put on a King Quest Pro Premium, which is SD. What have you done with your unit?

Thanks,

Ron Everson

DirecTV is changing everything sometime next year. Most SD (MPEG2) will go away and HD will replace it. Make sure your new dish will accommodate this.

Did the same a few months back - Winegard TravelerII. Removed old dome and installed the Winegard. Locks onto the 3 satellites almost everytime (unless something is blocking the antenna. You'll spend about $1800 on the Winegard ($1495 when you can find it on sale like I did) plus installation

I wouldn't get a dome right now until DirecTV says what they are doing with SD.

Or, make sure the dome can be switched to Dish Network.

Ron, I would not invest in a Direct TV mobile dome system at this time. Currently they are limited to standard definition (SD) with Direct TV service and Direct says SD is going away soon.

One of the larger antenna systems that operates the same as a home system and would be a safer investment or possibly go to a Dish Network system.

Why do you think HD is too much trouble? It is all automated and even if you use a tripod HD is no problem...........Future of SD is questionable at best.

The comment referred to domes. DirecTV has all of us in limbo while they decide what they will put on 101. This affects all the domes as well as the crank up 18" dishes. Of course we all could move to Dish. In the Winegard lineup, only the Traveller is sure to work on DirecTV after the switchover...none of their domes will currently receive HD from DirecTV.

I am not sure you are correct Scot. I'll wait for the OP to clarify.

OP was questioning the King Quest Pro Premium, which is an SD only antenna and requires an SWM adapter for SWM only receivers, which most of the new DirecTV receivers happen to be. This dish will only receive SD broadcasts and if an SWM adapter is required, it will add at least $200 to the installation.

Best wait and see what happens to 101, or go to Dish.

I must be slow this morning. Why would HD be too much trouble? If he is buying new just get HD.

One thing is sure, if it is DirecTV, sticking to SD ain't going to work!

FWIW: I replaced my ten-year old KVH R6 receiver with KVH RV1 which can work with either Direct TV, or Dish. I went with DISH and use their "pay as you go" system. Sold the old unit on eBay for $200, got $200 rebate from KVH, plus used the existing wiring and installed it myself - Very happy with the system!

All the best!
