Upset About 2006 Coachman Cross Country Towing
I have a 2006 Country Coach and I want to tow the DW's Toyota Venza. First I went to UHaul to rent a tow dolly to see how the MH would do with the Venza.
UHaul would not rent us a TD because, according to their computer, the Venza weighs 5050 lbs GVWR. That is full of 4 people, suit cases, fuel, etc.
The MH is rated to tow 5000# and has a 5k tow hitch.
The MH says it allow 156# per person, I don't know where they found those people as my family likes twinkes.
So instead of getting into the GCWR of the motorhome, which by the way includes 5000 for a TOAD. I never even get the motorhome close to it's GVWR.
I know the hitch engineers underrate their hitches by 10% for extra margin of safety.
I have seen FRED's, Class C's, and even class B's towing cars/pickups that I know exceed their GVWR for the total GCWR.
I know to take the MH to a scale and see what it weighs for it's GVWR. And take the TOAD as well.
DO YOU PULL A TOAD EVEN THOU YOUR GCWR SAYS YOUR TOAD GVWR IS TOO MUCH, BY THE BOOK? EVEN THOU YOUR TOOK IT TO THE SCALE AND IT IS UNDER WEIGHT.
Not looking to get anyone in trouble, just wandering why all those other RV's are pulling vehicles I know, by the book, are to big.
I have a 300hp cummins diesel with a Allison 2500 trans.

Yes, many of them are overweight, and no...they usually don't know or don't care.

I have to believe that UHaul is required to go solely by GVWR for insurance and legal purposes as they do not know what you will load into the vehicle being towed.
If you owned the tow dolly, you'll know exactly what you will load (or not load) into the vehicle being towed so even if the towed vehicle happens to be slightly over the GVWR, YOU know in reality that it is nowhere near the GVWR as you know exactly what you have loaded into the vehicle.
I don't think you can put any blame on UHaul for anything pertaining to this ...JMO.

Sorry about your dilemma but your title is confusing. Apparently you do not have a Country Coach but a Coachman. Country Coach only made diesel pushers and they all have at least a 10,000 lb tow rating and many have 15,000 lb tow ratings.
Your Coachman must be on a gas chassis (Ford or Workhorse) and most gas motorhomes are limited to a 5,000 tow rating.

No it is a Country Coach Cross Country 300 cummins diesel.
Believe it or not the hitch is only rated at 5,000 lbs, I know I had a hard time believing it but the manufactures booklet even says 5,000 lbs.

I believe people are confused by your signature, which says 2006 "Coachman."

Like some have said, some will do it whether or not they know they are overloaded. I have done it myself, my Moho is rated to tow 3500 lbs, I have a tow dolly that ways 500 lbs and has a load limit of 2500 lbs on the dolly. My truck weighs 4400 lbs so I have a total weight of 4900 lbs on a hitch rated at 3500 lbs. I made a short camping trip and did not do the interstate. I have air bags on the back so I can level the unit when loaded. I could definetly feel the difference and the front end was really light so steering was a challenge. Would I do it again? Probably not. My to dolly has surge brakes so I was safe there. Any future trips we are going to borrow the daughters car, its about a ton lighter and look for a smaller car to tow. I have the ford 460 engine and my mileage went from and average of almost 8mpg to a little over 6 mpg. Is there a safety factor in all the equipment? Sure but how much is the question. I did it but I would not recommend it to anyone and I am in no way advocating that it is the right thing to do.

CC did not make what you say you have; only Coachman did. CC and Coachman are very different companies with different product lines.

My 2000 Country Coach Magna does indeed have a 10,000 lb hitch but according to the coach specifications I can tow only 7,000 lbs. From what I've read on these forums, many people (apparently a whole bunch of motor home sales people) see a 10,000 lb hitch and assume they can tow 10,000 lbs.

Okie143,
I just checked the web and the "curb weight" of your Venza is apparently 3760 or 4045 depending on model. GVWR is apx 5000lbs +/-. You wont be towing the car with 1000 lbs of people and luggage inside (I hope!) so you don't have a problem. Tell Uhaul you are towing a different car with their dolly. They are not going to see it anyway! If I'm not mistaken they still wont rent trailers to Ford Explorers because of the Firestone tire problems of 15 yrs ago! Bizarre! You will be well within your towing limits, so "Get er Done"!! Happy Trails!
